Post Performance testing

Anyone out there got suggestions for relatively safe & accurate performance testing, ie 0 - 60, etc. Is there some sort of logging device one can attach to a laptop etc or is passenger with stop watch gonna be my only method!!

Demon Tweeks 01978 664466 sell a 'Performance Meter' at £116.25 inc. VAT. It measures 0-60, 60-0, 1/4 mile & Terminal speed, Horsepower!!!???

I do not know how good/accurate it is.

Here in the US a device called the G-Tech Performance Meter / Pro, sells for about $140.
I receintly got one for free with the purchase of a set of BFGoodrich Tires for my wifes Toyota .

I have not had the opportunity to test it with the winter weather. It claims to measure 0-60 & 1/4 mile times, Cornering G's, 60-0 Braking distance, AND Horsepower!
Check it out at:

I'll let folks know how it works when Spring comes....Tomorrow ???

Dear John,
I have a 91 C2 Tip. With the G-Tech Pro before mods my o-60 time was 7.0 sec. After ext and cup chip mods 5.6 sec (average of 5 runs).
It works great and money well spent. Hope this helps. Sam

SamK:

That's the right way to do it. I own the G-tech and I don't think that it can measure HP but 0 to 60 is realiable. Personally I believe that a real on road test like 0 to 60 is much better for performance measurements than dyno test runs. Different magazine test in Europe and the US have shown that dyno test runs are not reliable at all and not worth the paper they are printed on.

Demon Tweeks sell a digital speedo from SPA, I believe, that measures speed, distance e.t.c. It can also measure acceleration times between any two speeds. e.g. 0-60, 50-70, 100-160!!
As this works from the actual speed I would expect it to be very accurate. Obviously this doesn't risk frying the clutch to get a 0-60 time!

Nearly bought one a while ago but decided to speed the wonga on something else.

Guys

since my post I have found a place in teh UK that make two onboard "dynos". One is connected to the coil or spark lead and directly logs engine RPM. You supply the software tyre diameter, gearing, car weight etc and it will calculate HP & torque curves.

It other product is an accelerometer based product, a bit like the G-Tec. It measures speed (& hence 0-60 times etc) by measuring acceleration. It integrates acceleration over time to calculate speed. Again, it has a windows based interface - you tell it your tyres size, gearing, car weight, Cd, frontal area etc & it will produce power, torque curves etc. The benefits, over say a rolling road, is that your are measuring the power that is actually accelerating the car (as opposed to a rotating drum) in a real driving situation, so you don't get engine heating, hot inlet air etc that may skew rolling road results.

If any UK 964 owners want to chip in and share one, they're £125.

SamK

these improvements are drastic - could you be more specific on the upgrades??

Also, can I assume your two tests were done on the same stretch of road in roughly similar wather conditions??

I ask because trimming 1.4 sec of 0-60 is not a minor improvement!!

Dear john,
Sorry it took so long - I lost my password.
Testing conditions were very nearly the same; time, temp, road,and humidity. Mods for me C2 Tip Cab are as follows;
Cup Chip from Autometricks in Chas, SC
Cat bypass w/o O2 sensor from Europroducts in Fla at $130
Timing advanced 2 Degrees mechanically(91 Octane a must)
O2 sensor disconnected so full rich.
K&n filter and Air Box drilled
"J" tube bypass of secondary muffler.
Schaefer's Syn Oil from Autometricks
At full rich with O2 sensor disconnected after 20K miles, I lost 2 MPG and no change in plug color or cleanleness. I did notice a very small amount of residue around my exhaust pipe from being a little rich in fuel mixture. No change in leakdown after 20K miles, also. No signs of cylinder wash down.
Hope this helps, Sam
