Curing vague steering
My '90 C4, 150k km/95k miles, has rather vague steering. I've driven three 964s (albeit C2s) of similar mileage and age recently and all were far more precise than mine.
Most noticeably when pointing staight ahead it's possible to move the steering wheel several inches clockwise and anti-clockwise before any steering effect is felt.
Potential culprits that have been suggested to me include:
- worn dampers/springs
- worn steering rack
- worn tie rod ends
So...
Bearing in mind I've never driven a C4 to compare, should the steering be so different?
If there is wear, where is it likely to be?
What's a sensible approach?
Thanks,
Roly

Dear Roly,
Me thinks you have some worn components up front. I would be checking everything including the steering arms. It could be anything but believe me it is not normal.

I second Adrian's comments - my 90 C4 has 118,000km and apart from some low speed understeer (improved with recent alignment) the steering is as sharp and 'talkative' as I could wish for.
Front wishbone bushes can also wear/degrade leading to a vague sloppy feel through the steering and under braking.
Basically then, it's not normal!
Good luck & let us know how you get on.
Cheers

Thank-you for your replies.
I have owned my C4 since Summer 1998 and have not noticed any deterioration. I suppose there must have been some but don't ever remember the steering being very tight. All those years wasted

Roly,
have you set any actions to resolve this?
I belive my '93 C2 has the same thing.
When the car was in the shop to get the water leakage problem from the rear window fixed, I got a replacement car and the steering on that C2 was much more direct, even though I have the M030 option and that car didn't ...
