Question When do you need to replace the battery?

I managed to flatten the battery a few weeks ago by using the tyre pump for too long without the engine running.

I now have trouble starting it. I've tried recharging it overnight. Its a sealed unit so I can't top up the water. It seems to have about 12.4 volts if I leave it overnight after a run. Acording to the "grey book" this means its only got about 75% charge.

I suppose I'll have to get a new one. Any recommendations on batteries?

How accurate is your volt meter? What voltage is the alternator putting out (measured at the battery terminals)? When did you last clean the battery terminals? You should measure beteen 13.8 and 14.5 volts at the battery posts with with engine running. Definately check the alternator before replacing a battery. I have cured a dead battery symptom by simply cleaning the terminals with a wire brush.

Thanks,

I have confidence in the multi meter I'm using. I haven't tried measuring the alternator output at the battery terminals, thats a good idea. I think the terminals are fairly clean, but I'll check them again. I'll let you know how I get on at the weekend.

David... As Springer said... Clean the terminals. They make a tool specifically for this that sells for about $5 in the auto parts stores. It snaps apart and has round wire brushes for the inside of the terminals as well as for the posts. It works very well and gets them very clean. Any oxidation can create so much resistance that it will not take a charge or you will have charging problems. I'd also invest in a trickle charger for times you may not drive it. (Not sure if it is your daily driver.)

If you do replace it you may want to check out an Optima battery. They are sealed units and have quite a good reputation. Mine was smaller and lighter than my original too!

Good Luck!
