Hi All
I'd like to convert my H5 headlights to H4's, but I'm not sure how this can be accomplished. The current H5's mount to the fender by 4 screws to the aluminum headlight frame. The ring is then secured at the top by a lip and at the bottom with a screw. It appears the H4's only rely on the lip at the top of the ring and the screw at the bottom of the ring to secure the headlights. The 4 screws are not utilized and this concerns me. Is it possible that the single screw and lip at the top the ring is all that the H4 system relies on for mounting? If anyone has had any experence with this conversion or knows how the mounting is done, I'd appreciate hearing from you.
All responses are appreciated

Hi Bill,
The H4 system only relys on a single screw at the bottom. I did it on my car & I will tell you they hold in just fine, no concern what so ever.

Ditto. I have used both H-1 & h-4's (same mounting. If you want the painted rings, you will need what I call "duplex screws" (don't know the real name) -Large screw first on the bottom to hold things in, then small screw that screws through the ring into the first screw. Looks nice, bit of a pain sometimes to get the screw started wiout cross thread. Overall, a simple, safe system. Have used these for years and have yet to have a headlight fall out!

Hi Tom
The optical characteristics of the H4 lens/reflector are superior to the H5 system. The lens and reflector are separate in the H4 system making it easier to clean the inside and cheaper if a lens has to be replaced. The H5 system's lens and reflector are one unit and even as a unit the H4 headlight is less expensive. There are higher wattage bulbs available for the H4 headlight.
Hi Horst
The H4's I've looked at have the paintable black rings (P/N 0301 800 103 for years 1982 to 08/1992 ) mounted to them. I don't see any need to have duplex screws installed unless it is to avoid maring the finish under the head of the adjusting screw.
Thank you for your responses

Hi All
I resolved the problem I had with a totally smashed H5 lens and a badly weathered one by removing the lenses, mounting some weather stripping with new H4 lenses on the old H5 reflectors. The fit with the original rings is better than the fit with the original H5's and at $40.00 CDN for each lens vs. $250 to $400 for new H4's or H5's, I couldn't be more satisfied.

Does anyone have a detailed description of an installation as well as an explanation of how to safely run higher wattage bulbs.
I don't think these are just 'plug and play', correct?
