original porsche alarm ?
OK here it goes .....
Own a 1990 C4 ... apparently with the original alarm ...
How can I activate the alarm deliberatly to check if its OK ?
I own the car now since 9 months and never heard the alarm. Whats the sound of it ? Horns on/off, indicators on/off ?
Only thing visible are the little red lights in the door when I lock the car.
Thanks to all ....

One more question pls.
If I want to be able to open/close the doors remote, should I reinstall a new alarm or is it just a small update as the P-car already has got central locking.
Thanks again ..... and sorry for the maybe silly questions ....

I'm not sure how to set the factory alarm off, but would not worry about it & instead buy a new alarm as your standard one is 10 years old & proably not up to "modern" car theives!!

Hi There
I have a cab so i usually lock the door with the roof off and the use the manual button to unlock the door and the alarm goes off.
I your case i would get someone to lock you in and then operate the manual dial on the door to unlock it, your horns should go off and flashing lights. Dont know if this works but leave the window open and try to unlock car buy putting you hand through the open window.
Regards

I am not sure about insurance requirements in Belgium, but certainly in Holland you won't be able to get the P-car insured without what's called overhere a "class 3" alarm. The original Porsche alarm in the 964 is not up to that standard, so we have to add an up-to-date alarm.
These new alarm systems come with a remote control. They're pretty expensive by the way. The OPC installed mine as part of the purchase deal, but mentioned it was around 1250 Euro. I could not care less as the OPC would pay for it, but still.

How to test the alarm,
Disable the interior ultra sonic part with the rocker switch in the drivers footwell, lock the carwith a window open, manually undo the doors with the rotary switch, should get alarm/horn/flashing indicators.
I had to get my Alarm system independantly verified by a OPC, before Direct Line would insure it for theft. They usually charge for the service, in my case thought they didn't.
It works as a verified cat 2 immobiliser, but it also sounds the alarm as stated above.
Hope this helps.
Kevin.

What does this switch control? how does it work? I have not been able to find any info about this.

Hi,
Not sure if your US spec 964 has the same options as us Brits; as sometimes our OPC would put different Alarm systems in for Insurance reasons, but, if they are the same then,
In the drivers footwell, on the centre transmission tunnel at ankle height there may well be a rocker switch, and corresponding LED. It dissables the interior ultrasonic part of the alarm, its called the "vent switch" I believe. (postings on titanic forum) this would then allow sunroof to be opened, windows down etc, without setting off the interior ultra sonic alarm. But it still allows the alarm and immobiliser to be set and working.
two position switch, either ultra sonic on or off.

I have a '92 UK car with original Porsche alarm. There are no ultrasonic detectors that I can see, nor is there a switch in the footwell - but I'll have another look!
1250 Euros for an alarm - thats extortionate!!!A top of the range alarm in UK can be had for sub £300.
Finally, with regards remote key fob - I had mine replaced by a 3rd party key fo b place for £30 and it works perfectly - from about 35 fett (if my car was Guards Red, the alram fob would operate from 250 feet, or so I'm told ).
You need to either have the old fob or quote a code that you will find on a chip in a black box under your seat.
good luck

Mine has the "standard" Porsche alarm and door entry key. No remote on fob. It is a CAT 2 thatcham approved immobiliser system.
I did enquire as to the cost about the remote IR type on fob and it is £700. that was yesterday.
They would then rip out the old immobilliser and replace it with the remote stuff.
Maybe if you have this newer device they have removed the older type? and with it the "Vent Switch" I'm just guessing, mine is a 93plate, so I don't know.

£700 !!!!!!!!
Where are these prices coming from. I was advised to get non-porsche IF I replaced as they are better, but I was getting much lower quotes for alarms/immobilisers. Even upgrading from the older porsche alarm (P100 I think)to a newer one (P1000 I think?) was only £180 with the 2 new key fobs from JCT Porsche in Leeds.

John, I agree, but when I bought a VW Golf Cabrio about 6 years ago for my wife, we had an alarm installed as well, class 2 (=immobilizer and interior detection), and that was around 800 Euro! Yep, pretty expensive, just like the cars overhere.

I also have the 'standard' immobilizer alarm with the key entry only. Category 2 I think. As long as my insurance company approve, I think I will leave it as it is.

Hi,
Definitely in the UK, replacing the alarms only cost about £250 - £300. I know, because I had to replace mine when I bought the car. It cost me about £300 to have the old one taken out and a Cat 1 alarm fitted.
My old alarm was the original Porsche one, complete with remote central locking. But - I think you have to be careful when you talk about original Porsche alarms. My understanding is that the UK cars have systems that were fitted here (subcontracted out by OPCs) so original Porsche alarms on UK cars are not the same as ROW.
