Post Supercharging or Turbocharging a 964

I've read through many of the threads, but would really like to open the topic again to see what the latest and greatest is. Basically, I've recently moved to Seattle and would like to move to a 964 C4 (can't touch the throttle in the rain up here in anything with a bit of power), but 247HP just isn't enough for me after my previous string of cars. A 993 Turbo would obviously be the easy route, but I'd prefer to explore the forced-induction options available for the 964 first.

As background, I've built motors, do all my own wrenching, and have a solid mechanical background. My daily driver truck is turbocharged and alcohol injected I also spend a good deal of time at track days and other racing events, and am critically interested in knowing if anyone is successfully running a "bolt on" kit regularly under these type of conditions. I don't want a hand grenade, and I'd rather not build up the motor from scratch either. I've owned a 66 911, European 79 930 (quite fun!), 944, and 88 928 (bigtime modified).

Sooo, help me out here - tell me your tales of woe or success. If you'd rather email me privately, please feel free to do so. If I hear some success stories, I'll move forward with purchasing a C4 <img border="0" alt="[burnout]" title="" src="graemlins/burnout.gif" />

i live in seattle - it's not that bad up here....
some things to consider.
1. i'm installing a Race Logic Traction contol system which should even things out in the wet when compared to a 4 wheel drive car.
2. Supersharging is cheaper and you can get similar gains w/o lag

i'd do both to a 2 wheel drive car - you can always remove them if you get another car.

I'm selling my Pod Light sytem if anyone is interested (Hood, Pod, Switches, relays, 4 7" Hella's, etc)

Cecil in the US and Mark Budgen in the UK have both used the TPC s/c on their 993's with no complaints.

I think Mark's is more customised, in that he has upped the boost and uses water injection to handled the detonation problem. I think Mark was looking at an intercooler to replace his water injection system - but not sure.

HTe TPC system uses a 'black box' to run a 7th injector to handled extra fuel requirements - but Colin Blelton at 9M in the UK has used a TPC supercharger AND a MOTEC with bigger injectors to handle the extra fuelling. This seems like a good combo.

Lastly, another UK based hill climber used a centrifugal blower (see 911 & PW magazine from about 6 months ago) with high boost to make BIG HP & Torque.

This is a debate with supporters & detractors in equal measure - some guys worry about the levels of boost with the stock C?R - others think the low boost of the TPC s/c doesn't need lower c/r pistons....

THe real answer is akin to '..how long is a piece of string.....'

Irid,

As John says I have a TPC kit installed by Colin Belton but added a small intercooler and water injection having bumped the boost slightly just in case. CR has been reduced to help as well. I make about 310-320rwhp which is enough for me but the torque is what makes it fly. I've posted some pictures in earlier posts so maybe worth a search of the archives.

Cheers, mark.

What boost levels are you running and what is the CR? Also does your motor have any other tweeks? - i'm really interested as well. IMHO you would need to run a the very least bigger injectors and water injection to control detonationa and extract the Most HP from this setup (as well as an intercooler) the Motec system combined with bigger injectors should give you a 10% gain alone. i know super chargers of knoxville is claiming 400+ for thier setup....which would be a 45% + gain but for how long is the question?

Yes I know TPC runs the 7th injector to get around the smog issues (they don't touch the ECM so it's easier to get it CARB approved) but that's a pretty cheesy way to increase fueling. Seems easy to lean out one cylinder... I was thinking about getting the Protomotive software and cutting my own chip for it (and using larger injectors if necessary) to get around that and to keep it somewhat stealthy.

I'm really interested to know just how much abuse someone has subjected these kits to. I.e. if they feel comfortable running them in an open road race for instance (probably the best way to stress test a motor - 90 miles of top-gear WOT). I would certainly count on running water or alcohol injection on top of a "fat" fuel curve simply as an added measure of safety, and would try and work in an intercooler solution as well. I'd keep the boost at the "stock" kit level and see how it looks with an EGT.

On the other hand, the Protomotive Stage 1 conversion could be interesting as well ($9500) and seems to have more upgrade potential. I've had a 930 before though, and am somewhat attracted to the instant throttle response of the supercharger.

Please chime in if you've got one of these kits on your car. I'm aware of the TPC, Knoxxville and Protomotive solutions. Post if you know of more.

I've got an SoK motor in my widebody. 28k miles with quite a bit of track use. Big intercooler, 9.0/1 compression, custom cam grind, EFI piggyback ECU contoller. 7-8 PSI, 375 HP @ the wheels dynoed. Do a search under supercharger on the 964 forum & check out: Need some guru help/advice . Drop me an email & I will send you back my phone number so we can talk. <img border="0" alt="[cheers]" title="" src="graemlins/beerchug.gif" />

I've posted info on the Protomotive Stage 1 turbo install in my 90 964 C2 at the link below.

You may want to look at Ruf's RCT Evo kit too. I saw a presentation about it. It was very impressive not only for the power but the level of quality. It looked like the factory. Not a aftermarket add-on.
