Just thought I'd share this idea which I've been trying out, and seems to work.
Like a good number of 964's my car suffers from the odd oil drip from the through bolts. When this burns off, I get the horrible oily smell in the cabin.
In the industry that I work in (Chromatography), we need to use extremely clean gases, and the air which we use in particular must be free of hydrocarbons (oil). To clean this we use carbon filters, and so I thought, where can I get hold on to a cheap and versatile carbon filter to put into the ventialtion system.. Then realised the same idea is used to catch grease etc in an oven extractor in my kitchen. So went down to the local diy shop, bought some extractor filter with charcoal, cost £8 ($14) and installed it before the fan as per picture below. Sure it's curing the symptom, but hell for £8 and 10 minutes to fit, it'll do a treat until I'm ready to get the engine sorted.
Also, I didn't trim the filter paper, just so you can see what I've done.

 

You're kidding, right? The horrible oily smell is what makes the air-cooled Porsche unique!

I have to agree ! There could be an idea in that, what about a kind of air freshener which smells of oil, could sell in bulk to the 996/997 crew to see what they're missing !!

 

That's one oily engine you've got there, close call between where there's the most oil, inside or outside the engine/tank.....

what about the high temp on the paper? No risk of fire maybe. Dont think paper burns till a bit over 400 degrees so maybe no problem but ??????? Does it work?

 

Went for a drive for an hours drive, and didn't notice that area of the engine bay hardly gets hot at all. I did think of that one, could just imagine a disaster !
It certainly works, otherwise wouldn't have posted this !

 

That engine doesn't look too bad... You could always hose it down with a degreaser... avoiding the electronics...

BTW... paper burns at 401 degrees fahrenheit... You don;t have anything to worry about... But I would trim it up... You may have a pretty cool invention there!

 

do you have a distribuiter vent attached? Dont see it in the picture.

 

Just a couple of things to note, the oily looking stuff which is visible, isn't oil. The last owner I believe tried to use some kind of lacquer on the engine to shine it up and well, it don't look too pretty !

The vent kit is fitted, just using a tee fitting into the hose which goes to the light cluster.

 

Smell of oil and old leather... that is how my wife knows I have been using the Porsche...

 

Too funny - that was my instant reaction too.................I like that smell and some guy wants me to lose it......

 

My brother, who has owned a '75 targa and an '89 3.2, came to visit, sat in my 964, inhaled deeply, and said "Nothing else in this world smells like an air-cooled 911." It instantly transported him back to those older cars. So they're also time machines!

 

Good idea, but that's the reason I wanted to go air-cooled in the first place... Love that oil smell.

 

I agree - while my wife always complains that my car "smells" (as she wrinkles up her nose in disdain), I think the classic smell of oil and leather is as much of a signature of the air-cooled 911's as the bug-eyed headlights.

I feel left out. For some strange reason this is my first 911 that DIDNT smell like burning oil.
Cant say i really miss it
