But all those Alpine flashing lights, fiddly button and ghastly LCD graphics.........in your clean lined 964.

Buy a Becker, designed by Germans for Porsches.

Thumbs up

Yet another endorsement for Rod Birch at Car Audio Innovations... http://www.caraudioinnovations.com/installations/bradspeedster.htm

I also agree with Christian and Nol, in that almost ANY amp can be mounted under the passenger seat..

I do not specifically know about the sound/speaker characteristics of the 964. However I had a similar situation with my benz, and from my expierence with the 964's it is probably the same. For(head units)stereos I would always recommend an aftermarket one. There are many advantages of a aftermarket unit. Power increase, adjustable equilizer by frequencies, adjustable crossovers, cd-r,cd-rw capability, larger number of tuner stations, ability to set the audio properties to the cars specs and speakers. This ability can make or break a system, if you are limited to your adjustments you may get some distorted sound or improper frequency response. If you can adjust everything, then the frequencies of your speakers ca be accounted for and treble and bass sent to the right places for a killer sound. I used a DEH-P6000 Pioneer unit in my benz. It was top of the line when I bought it three years ago. However I keep up with the times. I would recommend Pioneer, Kenwood, or Alpine. My preference has been Pioneer over the years, they seem to have the most easily accesible features and layouts and they have stayed with the same basic design over the years, which means they improve upon a design they know is solid, not redesign it every 2 years like Sony, redesigns always have flaws and are dated by the way they look most of the time. First, before any purchase I would research heavily and order a catalog from www.crutchfield.com, they are the main source on specs and features. Best deal on purchase and installs, Circuit City by far, they warranty their work and will take longer than most shops, but it is because they take their time ad they do it right. I have had 6 different installs by them in varous friends and family cars, and every one has been absolutely perfect.

Just my two sense,Jay

I upgraded mine to a Blaupunkt Honolulu (blk face & orange LCD) with a 10 CD changer mounted in the spare tire. I chose it because it had the basic features and the coloring the matched the rest of the interior.

I also upgraded the speakers to Quart MB. I passed on an amplifier. I didn't want to take over space in the trunk.

1 year later, I'm still very happy. Having a unit with CD-R/MP3 ability would be nice.

My 2 cents.

I tried to economize, myself, so I started with just the door speakers, Polk Audio. It was okay but not a great improvement. Next came the Eclipse CD player and blam!--great sound!

The Eclipse products are top notch. I believe their starter unit is in the $200 range, so you may want to give them a listen. The shop bypassed the amp and I haven't experienced much skip even at the track! (okay, the last part was pure BS, but it IS a great unit and I can't recall it skipping once)
