Post A/C switch on '90 C4

When I switched on my A/C this morning the switch popped out and all the little springs/pieces flew out. I was able to jumper the contacts to get the A/C to work but need a permanent solution.

I'm assuming that the whole assembly needs to be replaced since with Porsches there's no simple solution to anything. Does anyone have or know anyone who may have a used assembly that I can purchase (I'm afraid to ask what a new one costs).

Most appreciative for any help or guideance.

I had a 964 C2 a while ago...the fan switch was not working properly....it is a modular unit and I had to replace the climate control unit to the tune of $1,400.00 and change....the current part is the same unit as in the 993....maybe you can find a used or rebuilt one...

Good Luck

According to the Porsche parts catalogue these buttons are sold by the factory or were as separate items. However in reality this may not be possible. No valid reasons of course except most companies are just too lazy to try and get individual parts. They make money out of selling whole units. Which also creates problems depending upon which model year you have. I always advise to try a wreckers first or find somebody on this list with wrecked ones. I know there are people around who claim to have u/s ones maybe they can help,

Hi jlm003

Don't panic, this switch is sold by OPC for £36 I replaced mine 3 months ago, it took 1 hour to do the whole job and I know nothing about electronics. You don't even have to solder the new switch in because it just pushes in the circuit-board and makes contact though some heavy duty pins on the switch. This is a very easy job to do.

Just make sure when you order the part from the OPC that you specify wether it's the 2 button aircon switch or 1 single big button.

I hope the above helps.

Cheers

Dear Gary,
The only problem with your post is you are in the UK and the original poster is in Puerto Rico. OPC is a UK based firm. Do they do overseas orders and how does this affect the price. Could you also provide some form of contact info for people outside of the UK of this company.
Ciao,
Adrian

PS: I have struck many a firm who end up refusing to sell outside of the UK or the EU for various reasons.

Hi Berkley,

If you ever (God forbid!) need another climate control unit, purchase it from one of the discount Porsche dealers. For example, Sunset (Oregon) or Hendrick Porsche. I bought one from Hendrick last December for "only" $760, which is basically dealer cost (list is currently $1150). Don't know how they can sell it so cheap, but I'm not complaining.

Adrian, 'OPC' stands for Official Porsche Centre, which is a long winded English way for saying Porsche dealer. The OPCs are those dealers authorised by the factory to sell and service Porsches.

Basically, its the place not to go if you care about your money. If something is £100 in an OPC it will be about £40 anywhere else. We love being ripped off in England....

Hi,
Riccardo is correct. But I phoned around and no one would sell the AC button seperately. I got my button from Lancaster Porsche in Cambridge(OPC), their contact details are as follows:
porsche@cambridge.lancasterplc.com
Tel: +44 (0)1223 872872
Fax: +44 (0)1223 875626
Speak to Chris or Andy in Parts division.
I'm not sure if they will ship the part to Puerto Rico.
Regards

If you have problems with them shipping to PR, I can handle that for you. Just buy the part and get it sent to me - I'll advise the shipping price and off we go.

It migh tbe cheaper to see if you can get a supplier nearer to you before we go this route....

Gentlemen, being new to this forum I'm overwhelmed by the outpour, quality-of-substance and willingness to help a fellow owner. Thank you!!

Gary, if it's not an imposition, can you give me the p/n for the one button switch?

Christer, I may have to take you up on your offer... However, I'm leaving for Spain July 12th on my yearly 1 month vacation (I was born there and have all my family there) so if Gary can get me the p/n, I'll try to get it while I'm there.

Once again my sincere gratitude and admiration for all your efforts.

Regards to all,
Jose L. Menendez

Hi Jose,

Here's the Part No. you're after:
964 653 921 00 (Single Button) £34.51 incl VAT.
944 653 922 00 (Double Button) Same price as above.

Below is the URL for all the Spanish OPC's (Official Porsche Centres) so just check which is going to be the closest to your holiday destination and pre-order it (via the attached e-mail address) and it should be there when you arrive. If you have any hassles installing the button just drop me a e-mail "off-line" and I will give the best directions I can.

All the best

Yes, Gary, please let us know how you did it. (that's the confused graemlin)

I nicked mine and now my car is not perfect. Arrgh! I went to the Porsche dealer and they quoted me some $65 for a replacement switch (944 653 922 00). They even pulled it out but I told them I needed to get my PCA coupon before I finished the transaction.

The connection looks similar to a door window switch, but how do you get that face plate off? I noticed the small holes, so is it a special tool (like one used to remove a stereo) or a small allen wrench? I'm guessing you need to pull the ***** off as well. <img src="confused.gif" border="0">

Hi,
I used a steel coat-hanger, you could use any striaght, sturdy (15-20cm length) wire that will fit in the hole on the front plate.
1. You need to insert the wire approx 5-7cm straight into the hole (towards the lugage compartment) and that corner will be released, remembering that the whole unit will be released, same as a radio unit.
2. There is thick cable connection on the rear of the unit which must be removed. Once the unit is removed from the dash, remove all the ***** and slides.
3. Now the front face plate can be removed by clips on top and bottom of the unit. Be careful as there is a temprature resistor wire that is very fragile mounted in a tubular plastic mounting facing forward, this I think is to measure cabin temp.
4. Once the face is off you will clearly see the PCBoard were the buttons push in (no soldering needed).
5. Just pull out the old (broken button) and insert the new one making sure all legs are making contact with the PCB.
6. Before re-assembling, plug the electrical plug on at rear of unit and turn ignition (do not start engine) just to make sure the button is working.
7. Then re-assemble in reverse order.

*** DO NOT***
Try and remove the face plate while the unit is still in the dash with a flat screwdriver, this will make a indent in your dash and the face plate is brital and will break, you must use a wire to "release" the whole Unit.

Cheers, hope the above helps.

Use a pair of Blaupunkt radio remover tools. This is the safest. You can modify a coat hangar to suit as well. The biggest danger is damaging the locking tabs. If they are gone the controller will never be firmly installed again. I have seen and heard of this happening more than once.
