starter question, possible replacement?
Well the battery replacement on the 89 C4 went smoothly and I swear the car idles smoother, but now the starter is acting up. Symptoms are a starter that spins but sounds like the bendix gear doesn't engage the flywheel and kind of grinds on it. The next try and no problem. The car only has 58,000 miles, is this common?
Next question is where is the starter located?(still waiting for Adrian's book to be done)Can the starter be taken out without removing the engine? I searched the archives and have seen this question asked but no concrete answers.THANKS..

Andrew, the starter is located on the passenger side of the vehicle and attaches to the transmission bellhousing.
Absolutely, positively, undoubtedly and fer sure (redneck absolute
) can the starter be removed without engine removal...HOWEVER...starter removal can be facilitated a bit easier if you lower the engine just a bit.
You can do this by putting the rear of the car up on jackstands, taking a wood block and placing it on your floorjack saddle, jack up to the seam in the engine case to support the engine, remove two nuts on your engine mounts and lower 4/6" CAREFULLY, watching for anything to bind on the body and ensure you're not stretching/breaking any wiring harnesses.
I've done this more than a few times to work on various issues with my 911SC and 964 - only had to replace a starter on my SC, went for the Tilton lightweight/high-torque version.
...which, BTW is NOT available for a 964. <img src="graemlins/cussing.gif" border="0" alt="[grrrrrrr]" />

Thanks Jeff, but it looks like my starter has behaved itself when it heard me talk about a replacement. So now I'm planning on changing the tranny and front diff fluids this week, just have to pick up the Mobil 1 to do it and find an interesting way to jack up the car on all fours. Any ideas? I figure to drive the car up on to the front wheel ramps, then jack up the back under the motors and put a couple of stand under the rear jack points. Hope I have enough clearance to get the jack under the motor once the front end is up on the ramps.

Hi,
I did a starter replacement last May.
You just lower your gearbox on the front end, and then you have enough space to work.
It's a 3 hour job [first time]
Good luck, and.......... disconnect your battery!!!
