Post Battery Cut-off Switch Installation

I'm looking for people that have performed a battery cut-off switch installation on their 964.

There are a few venues out there of which to retain the "proper" setup for a 964, and they are quite pricey.

What I'm interested in is installation tips, particularly in regards to wiring the fuel pump relay properly so when you shut off the battery (after an incident at the track) and the engine is still running...the alternator will provide the juice for the fuel pump...so you see the need to wire the fuel pump relay to the battery side of the switch.

I'm sure it's simple...but I only want to do this ONCE.

Also, if anyone has pics of their installation, that would be great as well...please send them to my personal email address, low resolution please...as I only have dialup.

I am performing this installation to conform to PCA Club Racing guidelines and am doing it in conjunction with an Optima Gel battery installation.

See, even a "know it all" needs help sometimes!

Jeff,

Search on the racing forum. I posted the wiring schematic from a Vol 10 Up-Fixin article (p.111) on the cut off switch awhile back. If it doesn't show up, let me know and I'll find the scan (think it's on another PC).

Jeff,

This all sounds pretty exciting BUT have you seen the proposed PCA Club Racing rule changes for 2003? It appears 964's might go up to E Class.

Proposed 2003 Rule Changes

The proposal also calls for stock RSA's to go DOWN to E Class. This change involves correcting the power to weight ratio by adjusting the minimum weight to 2,954 as opposed to the previous 2,760 Cup Car spec. It seems the 964's may end up being less competitive when it's all said and done.

I imagine you're well-versed on the topic, but just in case ...

Jeff,
If your're going to VIR this weekend for the Potomac DE, I'll let you look at my setup. My shop installed a cutoff switch identical to the Cup cars and also installed a second pull switch on the dash.

Joey: This E class subject came up last year and because there wasn't enought data that proved that the C2 were dominant, they remained in F. I think what will happen is they will create two F classes (as described in the proposals). The same two or three drivers have been winning all the races in C2 and to give proper credit, I think it's more driver ability than the car. I've been racing a C2 in F since 1998 and I can tell you that the car's biggest weakness is its weight and brakes. Those top drivers seem to have mastered the fine art of managing brakes.

Now, Jeff, with his big red brakes, would be in E as of the 2002 rules. If the rules changes go in effect for 2003 to two classes, he could be in D.

Jeff,
I'm having the same done to my C4 next week. Unfortunately due to my non existant mechanical skills I'm having the race shop do it. Are you going to install a window net as well? I'm told there is a kit where the net attaches to the door that doesn't mess up the upholstery or upper door sill trim.

Joey, I'm not really concerned with what happens to the rule changes, and am slightly aware of the proposals. I just want to get out there and see what I can do.

Some of the F class C2 guys are doing better times than the E class guys, so, that tells me that if my Big Reds land me in E class, cool...some of the C2 guys in F class are way too dominant, I've been on the track with all three of them and can't hold a candle to them...although I don't seem have a hard time with anybody else!!

If my Big Reds put me where I'm uncompetitive, well, I can always revert back to C2 calipers and rotors...but it's actually more expensive, and I'll wind up those those three lunatics!! (no names here)!!

Yes Chet, I am installing the cut-off switch myself, in no hurry...and Manny, I won't be at the Potomac event this weekend, but would like to be...too many things to do around the house. I will be there the last weekend in Sept. and the first weekend in October, which is of course, the event that I run for FSR. ...will YOU be there?

If not, I might "eyeball" your setup at another event, might take me a few months to figure out exactly how I want it...there aren't any 964s in the area (Norf./V.B.) setup for Club Racing.

Chet, as far as a window net solution, there are a few, the best seems to be through DAS Sport Systems as they have the kit you speak of, clamps into the window frame without messing it up. The difference between the installation of a window net in my car is whether I will continue with a rollbar or a cage...if I install a cage, I will have the ears welded on to accept the window net supports.

Bill, certainly I will look for your post...but will probably learn more from eyeballing different setups and actual pictures...although a schematic will be very helpful.

Thanks for the suggestions, advice and whatnot...keep 'em coming...still looking for pics too!

If you ever need to swap brake parts, just let me know!

BTW, I noticed the Rocket's sporting some cool 993 wheels these days. Since the BBS track rims didn't work out for me--wobbled, required longer studs, wrong offsets and butt ugly--I've actually been looking at Cup II's. They seem to be a good choice due to the price and weight, 19 up front and 22 at the rear.

Any comments on the wheels? They sure look fast!

Oh my god! ...I know that car.

Where in the world did you find that picture??

...I must have posted it one night while on a drunken binge - now the secret to speed is out...Polka Dots are the answer!

...right Manny?
