Default 964 Questions

I have a friend who is looking for a 964 and has some questions. He is looking for the newest non-airbag car he can find. I belive originally airbags were optional on the 964's but can anyone tell me when airbags became standard equipment? Is it also possible to find out how many non-airbag equiped coupes were imported to the US with out sunroofs?

Thanks,

Dan

He can just buy a 1994 964 (the newest) and change the steering wheel to remove the driver's airbag.

In 1989 964's there were no airbags (K series? - can't quite remember the letters). In 1990 model-year on there were airbags standard on the US cars.

Usually having airbags is what draws people (me at least) to the 964 model!

yeah! i agreee with Garrett about the airbags. i reckon that the steering wheel with the airbags looks a lot better. you've also got the safety factor covered i guess.
in Oz only 1993 onwards came with airbags.

I guess that narrows it down to an 89 to get the newest non-airbag car. They are kind of sensitive around here when it come to removing factory installed safety equipment. Does anyone know how many 89 coupes, with out sun roofs, were imported to the U.S.?

Yes. The 2 wheel drive version of the 964 didn't come out until 90.

Nope.
1117 1989 C4s were built for the US market. How many actually landed on US shores, how many went to Canada and elsewhere nobody knows.
How many with or without sunroofs never possible to find out.
My guess based on US dealer requirements is that very few were imported in basic form which means without sun roof.
Ciao,
Adrian.

It should also be possible to get a 90 or 91 European 964 (mine is) and import it. These models don't have airbags (except some of 91).
These models are a bit better than the '89, and all problematic dual-mass flywheels have been fixed for a long time.

With the value of the dollar and the cost to make an ROW car legal in the US importing a ROW car from Europe is a joke.

Sorry, you are right.
I didn't consider the euro/dollar aspect since I bought mine in europe while I was paid in euros.
