Dear Bill,
1/. The 16 inch 7 spoke wheels are very light and very strong.
2/. A proven and still available combination for the 964 is 225 up front and 245s on the rear on 7JX16 front and 9JX16 rears. You can actually get away with a 245 on a 8JX16 rear which is even lighter.
3/. The tyres are cheaper for 16 inch wheels than for 17 inch and the choice is greater. Certainly here in Europe.
3/. You can use a higher sidewall tyre for strength but not lose on acceleration or if you own a C4 mess with the 6% differential problems.
4/. If you own a C4 especially 1989 or 1990 the 16 inch wheels are what it was designed for in the first place.
5/. I also believe that 16 inch wheels put less stress on the wheel suspension and body suspension components as compared to larger diameter wheels. I know of some racers on sprint tracks here in Europe who run 15 inch wheels on their 964 club class race cars. ,

PS: In the end however it comes down to personal choice. I am a keep it "lightweight" and uncomplicated fanatic plus I like to keep things like costs under control.
