I noticed an annoying problem on a long journey over the weekend.

The engine ran fine when the throttle was open, but everytime I backed off it seemed to misfire. The problem went as soon as I touched the throttle again.

Any thoughts on what to check first?

I had a problem like this on my C4 at the end it was that three inyectors were not working fine, I got them repaired and no problem since then.
