I've decided to go with the 993-look top when I replace mine. I think it looks way better.
My question comes from the CabrioWorld site. Anyone have particular experience or information on the three types of canvas (German, Sonnendeck, Stayfast)? Mine's a daily driver, so durability is as important as looks. Well, almost as important...
Thanks,
TD

Terry,
When I had my rear window replaced/restitched, the shop was able to to remove only the rear section of the roof from the car. The 964 top is really two separate pieces, joined by a zipper, so the shop can unzip the two, unscrew the rear section and remove that piece to resew the window and then reinstall it. At least that is the way my shop explained it to me, and as I said, they only charged $250 to replace the window.

I have a spare top for sale. It will include the entire top assembly, motors, and gears. The large part of the fabric is new, the rear is original but is good condition, the window needs to be replaced. Everything works except for the gears. The cover on the gears are broken at where the bolts attaches. Email me privately, I didn't know how to do that.

The original 964 top comes in 2 pieces, the main part, and the rear part which includes the plastic window. If the main part of your top is OK, you could go for replacement of the rear section only, which is a small operation (and investment) the PO of my car did this at the OPC for about 1000 Euros (=$´s), and I have seen this part advertized separately in some of the aftermarket hood specialists.

When spring rolled around, the previous owner would put the top down and put on the toneau cover - and he'd keep it that way day & night until winter. (It's been a South Florida car for nearly the past 10 years) Thanks to Rennlist, I've learned that this is a no-no. The top needs to be stretched taught. If you store the car as the previous owner did, you can develop tears at the pivot points.
....that's exactly what happened to my top. I've got two-four tiny tears at the pivot points in the main part of the roof. While they mostly appear cosmetic, they're not going to get any better. Therefore I've decided to go with a full replacement top instead of just a window or rear section replacement.
Thanks for the tips though - before posting this message, I didn't realize there were options.

The fitter I chose, as he had already done such a job, was Autotrim in Denton,Manchester. Ask for Jim , Tel 0161 336 5952.
I can send pics privately to whoever wants them.
Someone asked whether the new roof was quieter than before. Can't say it made any difference.
