The damper struts which hold up the engine lid on my ’92 964 were a bit on the droopy side, so I purchased some new ones from my local German & Swedish parts store (in the UK). They are described for fitment to “964 models with rear spoiler”. I have fitted them, but the problem now is the engine lid is nearly launched off the car when released!! Any ideas?
I also noticed when I removed them again, that the brackets on the body have two hole positions, an upper and a lower position. I didn’t notice when I removed the old ones which holes I should be using. Would this have any effect on the above problem? I couldn’t see that a 10 - 15mm difference vertically would affect the damper load on the lid that much.
Thanks.
Andy P.

Hello All,
I have a similar problem, my dealer replaced mine and the lid now flys open. I was under the impression that the lid was supposed to pop up slightly and then open with the assistance of someone?
Any feedback appreciated.

My 964 engine lid flies open too after I replaced the bad units with OEM shocks. The severity (if I can use that word) lessons a little after the hood is opened a few times.
My '86 engine lid would pop open slightly and then would need to be opened completely by a person.

Sounds to me like the struts are for a 964 with a heavy engine lid (eg. the RSA) - is yours just a standard (pop-up spoiler) lid?
I have just replaced mine with genuine Porsche ones - the lid rises on its own, but in a 'controlled' way.

Yes, that's what's supposed to happen when you refresh your engine lid dampeners...your lid tends to "fly" open.
It chills out a bit when you add a spoiler.
No, it doesn't really matter which way you mount them, although I guess there is a "correct" way.
I just tell people that it's my "Potato Launcher"!! <img src="graemlins/roflmao.gif" border="0" alt="[hiha]" />

Gary's right... that's exactly what I did and it worked great. Now unfortunately I now have to push really hard on the lid to get the latch to catch. I'm almost afraid I'll dent the lid since I have to push so hard to get it to latch. Possibly it's the spring in the latch.

I replaced the struts (both hood and decklid) on my '91 C2 right after I bought it, because neither lid would stay open on its own.
I'm not sure what the dealer replaced the struts with, but they don't "spring open". They "pop" up, and then you have to open the hood/decklid manually. Once up, however, they stay up on their own.
When I put the RSA tail on my car, I was worried that the rear struts would no longer hold the decklid up with the added weight of the wing, so I inquired about getting some RS America/Turbo rear struts and was told by the parts dept. guy at the dealer that *all* struts are a "930" part number - Porsche no longer supplies "regular" struts.

Thanks for all the feedback guys, most appreciated.
German & Swedish (my parts supplier her in the UK), list another strut for 964 cars without rear spoiler. Do you think this would be suitable considering the ferocity of the ones I have at the moment, or just be too weak?
Thanks.
