Hmm, 964's have around 250 hp, and the Factory 964 Cup cars produced 260-265 hp. That's 10-15hp more than stock, as opposed to the 25hp the seller claims, and a portion of the Factory gain came from better quality engine components. I'm not familiar with that particular chip, however, calling it a Factory chip might be a stretch.

I'd be very apprehensive about using an unknown chip in your car. I just evaluated
a chip for a customer where the chip supplier had set the timing map points for
advance values exceeding 50 degrees, i.e. advancing a Porsche beyond 35-40 degrees
could be very problematic and destructive. Besides a claim of 25 HP is dreaming
without other mods.

I read in Adrian's book that these chip installs dont do much and sometimes cause loss of horsepower in certain rpm area's. Page 510 in Adrian's 964 companion if you want to read more about how they "cheat" the stock system.

The way to do a chip is to work with someone who can put your 911 on a dyno, and after doing several runs, tune your chip. A friend of mine found in the high revs that his mix was too lean, and with tuning, he picked up some additional usable hp. Cost wasn't outrageous, maybe $300-$400, give or take.

good point Bill, your example shows those chips are not a plug in and go.

A good web site to check out is Andial's (www.andial.com), on the FAQ page
Question #2. That writeup is most applicable to the 964/993 with knock sensors.

Andial was/is Porsche Factory Racing USA and has built engines for many races,
e.g. LeMans, & Daytona.

I love it. "Factory Chip". He stands by his chips, salt and vinegar or bacon?
If anyone believes this I have a couple bridges in Sydney and Melbourne for sale
I recommend any 964 owner on this forum leave it alone.
Ciao,
Adrian.

Sure can. I can even deliver the deeds.
I equate these mail order chips in the same category of ordering a mail order tailored suit but only sending in your basic body dimensions.
Just like the every human body every 964 is unique. The basic dimensions are just not good enough.
I have some real horror stories in my files about these mail order/e-bay ready to rock and roll chips.
The fact is that the main problem with the 964 is the air side. It is highly restrictive. If you can fix this up and then "Match" or "Remap" your chip to the exact changes you have made you will gain significant benefits.
The process mentioned by Bill is the only one that works.
Just like the mail order suit when it arrives and you try it on and it doesn't fit most of these chips do not do anything either.
These chip sellers rely on two things;
The owners total ignorance to the facts and
You will believe it has made a difference because you have to believe it has made a difference because otherwise it was a waste of money and you cannot have that can you?
There are genuine companies out there in the US and around the world but even from these companies I never recommend you install just a chip or downloadable datamaps unless it is an update for your own mapped data gathered on their dyno.
However this is just my opinion. You will find many people who say they have had good luck with installing mail order chips. Mind you if you ask for the verification data you might be waiting a while.
Ciao,
Adrian.
