Hi, I have an 92 C2. It has 80K and has develolped a hard starting problem. In addition, now it seems to idle about 1200. What should I do?

Hi,

I'd suggest checking a number of things. If you have service history when were the distributor caps/rotors/plugs last changed. How old is your battery. The idle control valve (ISV) may just need cleaning but the problem could be related to failed or failing 02 sensor, mass airflow sensor and a host of other things. I'd suggest doing a detailed search on this forum with the advanced option and many of these issues will be explained. I've had these idle problems before and they can take some hunting down. Start off with the free or cheap things to check as it may be as simple as needing the DME system reset and idle adjusted. Fault codes in the ECU may also need to be checked using the Hammer/PST2 tool from any good specialist or Porsche centre.

How long have the symptoms been about? Are there any other symptoms, eg drivability issues/stalling /hesitation. Do you have Adrian Streathers 964 book that most buy which gives many excellent tips/troubleshooting and is invaluable when owning these cars. First thing to do would be the ISV clean (easy DIY) and to reset the system. This involves disconnecting the battery for 30mins to wipe the memory, re-connect and take the car out for a 15 mile plus drive using all the gears etc. The fuel maps etc are relearnt this way. This is free and a possible first step.

I'd strongly recommend a good search here using all the key words and see what that throws up. I'm not a great DIY on cars but managed to do a fair few things before i handed it over to a specialist and saved myself plenty that way. I'm sure others will chime in.

Hope this helps and that you find a quick, cheap and easy fix.

Cheers
Giles.
