Post Clutch & Flywheel Questions.

I'm happy to have recently discovered this list and have a couple of questions regarding my 91 C2 with 67k miles. First relates to the clutch, which was replaced by prior owner at 42,000 miles. I purchased the car 4 years ago at 50,000 miles. It is sometimes a little difficult to shift into first gear, and the clutch pedal must be pushed all the way to the floorboard. If carpet gets in the way it won't shift. I recall it being like that when I bought the car, and thought it was normal. Other gears shift easily and there is no slippage whatsoever. The local certified shop tells me that I probably need a new clutch; however this clutch has only 25,000 miles on it and I go easy on the car. Is it normal to have to push the clutch to the floor to shift into 1st?
The second question relates to my flywheel, which was replaced by the shop when the clutch was replaced in December of 1997. Should I inquire as to whether the replacement was a LUC or a Freudenberg?

John:

I would have the shop (or another shop) check the hydraulics and the linkage in the pedal area before assuming it needs a new clutch. Replacing the clutch on this car is a fairly big job.

As far as the DMF goes, if you have the records for the actual service (or you can get your hands on them) check the part number for the DMF. If the clutch actually does need to be replaced, have them see if the flywheel is a Luk at that point. It's stamped "Luk" on the inside of the flywheel.

You may want to check some of the more recent posts about adjusting the pedal etc.

Yup, like Bill said.

Check the pedal bushings and roll pins, then have the clutch slave cylinder bled, along with your brakes too...this will ensure fresh fluid with not bubbles.

Of course, make sure there are NO obstructions that would inhibit FULL pedal travel.

I doubt it's your clutch whatsoever, get a second opinion...you have a few options in Memphis, if I remember correctly - how far is Knoxville?? ...I know of a few good shops in that area, including a guy who owns a couple of 964 track cars himself.

YOU can verify if you have a LUK flywheel or not by crawling under the car with a worklight/flashlight and looking through the inspection holes to find "LUK" stamped on the outer ring of your pressure plate, this may require you to turn the engine over a bit, by hand, via your fan belt.

Good "LUK"! Hardeeharharhar, I just kill myself.
