Appearance of 'Cups' on 1989 Speedster
Question about the "Cups"...
Were 7.5-in front and 9-in rear "Cup" style alloy 17-in rims a possible option on a 1989 "Speedster?" I was under the impression the cups were available in 7-in fronts, not 7.5 in. If not, what/where was the first appearance of the Cups?
Thanks,
jon

Cups were available in 7.5" and 9" (both ET 55) on the 1992 Carrera RS. Prior to that, option M403, 17" cast cup wheels, was available. I don't know, however, if that option was available in 1989, only that it became available sometime before 1992.

17 inch wheels were never an option on 1989 and 1990 models of the 964. The Design 92 Cup Wheels came into being on the 1991 Turbo in 17 inch size. 16 and 17 Design 92 or Cup Design Wheels for the NAs, first came into the system for model year 1992.
As Bill points out, the 7.5s were only offered on the 964RS.
Optional wheels for the 1989 and 1990 models were 944 and 928 wheels 16s only but I have never seen a 964 fitted with these wheels,

PS: The 1989 Speedster was a 3.2 Carrera not a 964 model. The 964 Speedster was released in 1993 model year.

Hi Jon,
I saw those wheels also... if they fit a '89 Speedster, they won't fit a 964, and they are almost certainly aftermarket. If you are in the market for some factory Cup Design wheels that will fit (7Jx17 and 8Jx17), let me know, as I am about ready to sell the chrome plated set from my RS America.
Thanks, Mark.

Hi Adrian
I bought a 90 964 about a year ago with the 928 16" rims, and I thought at the time they were put on by the dealer or one of the previous owners, but now that you mentioned it, they may be an original option. They've grown on me due to their uniqueness as well the gold tinge on them is set off by the guards red which I've read has gold pigments.

Dear Bj,
That is a genuine option. Quite rare. Things do tend to grow on you after a while. I have also seen a C4 with the Design 90 wheels painted in the same body colour. Genuine option again but rare,

Yes but even rarer on a 1993 C2. I thought most people took Design 92 wheels as soon as they became available. Are these original or just a set of track wheels,

Hey Adrian,
Thats an early 89 C4, a pre-cat one as well! I am quite sure they are original factory wheels. I know for a fact that they are the wheels the car "wears" on a daily basis (or at least used to, its now just been sold).
If you want more info I can ket you know.
