Question Buying advice 964 C2

Hello!

I am new to this forum and offcourse I will use the search tool aswell to get information. But just to map som advice to my particular case it would be interesting with your comments.

I am looking at 964 C2's with 80000-130000 km on the clock. I have done some resarch, reading the buying guide in porsche world and so on. But I would like all input you can give to my check list. I'll leave for Germany on friday and will import the car.

For example:
What about a car with 100000 km on the clock with only 3 complete 20000km services made i.e 3 valve adjustments? Otherwise the servicebook is spotless.

How much should I knock off from the price on a car without AC?

Pros and cons comparing pre-92 and 92 modellyears?

Clutch seems to last everything between 80 tkm and upwards. How to check for a bad clutch/flywheel?

A list of possible weak points that is a must to check.

Hope this eminent forum will help me into a confident buyers position.

I can only speak about US spec cars, so I'll give my $.02 on the car in question based on my observations on US cars.

If I do my math right, 100,000 Km is 62,137 miles. Porsche says the valve adjustment interval for US cars is 15,000 miles. At 60k, the car should have had 4 valve adjustments. This car has had 3. It's certainly not ideal, but depending on the use of the car by the prior owners, the car could be just fine. If the car was used for mainly street use, I would think 3 adjustments is o.k. If I was buying the car, I would have the valves adjusted immediately for piece of mind.

A slipping clutch is a sure sign that it needs replacement. Short of dropping the tranny, there isn't too much that can be done to see how much life is left in a clutch. Talking with prior owners also helps find out how the car was used and if it might have been abused (which could prematurely wear out a clutch).

The dual distributors need a vent kit installed on cars built prior to the 1994 model year. $12 kit/part, 1/2 hr of labor.

Here's a shot of the dual distributors with the vent kit installed. Note the white tube running from the rear heater fan housing to the distributors.

Some of the early cars (1989 - 1991) could have the infamous cylinder to head leak, but this leak is rare. There is some debate on when the exact cut off was for Porsche's update to fix this leak, but I would inspect any 964 from '89 to '93 for this leak to be safe.

Check to insure all the warning lights light up when the ignition is turned on. Reviewing the owner's manual will be helpful to see what should light up and what should not. All the lights should extinguish except the rear spoiler light. This light will go out when the car goes above 4 mph. Any lights that stay on or don't light up indicate a potential problem.

Check to insure all accessories work. Non working accessories could be expensive to correct.

No A/C in a car would really be detrimental to a car's value here in the US to most buyers. Depending on your climate and location, it may not be that much of a factor. No A/C certainly simplifies things, reduces weight and reduces maintenance costs.

Other than that, the 964 is a pretty bullet proof car.
