There was a Merc 320SLK on the A130 as well last night, and he wasn't all that quick either.

Last week, there was a an S200 replica up there and to be honest I didn't try to race him. He came past doing at least 130mph, and I don't want to be doing that sort of speed with other traffic around. I think he would have spanked me though.

The S2000 is a extremely capable track car, and certainly a very serious match for a 964. Check out these websites for the anecdotal evidence:

On the street, I the S2000's torque deficit is an issue, but on the track it's a lot easier to keep the motor in the sweet spot (6000-9000rpm). The OTC results show Doug Hayashi's T3 S2000 beating the T1 996TT at 6 out of the 7 tracks.

waltk88, I checked out both websites and found nothing of significance. And your "anecodotal" evidence is practically meaningless. But just to clarify, I never made a claim that the S2000 isn't a capable track car. Hardly. It is a wonderful track car - probably much better suited for track usage than street useage. Unless you are just out to get a tan and chase women in Miata's around.

Christer, you should really be more careful. And I don't care how much he was begging for it, I don't think that this S2000 was prepared for what you've got.

The S200 is a completely different kettle of fish potentially. It is the Ford RS200 I am talking about and this one was almost certainly a replica as the originals are far and few between (as well as valuable). I almost bought one myself about 8 years ago - a kitkar effectively produced by Kara cars here in the UK, a tubular chassis where a Sierra Cosworth is the donor car for interior, engine brakes etc. - a very impressive performer. The one I tested was 350hp, 1100kgs. Huge turbo lag though but easily faster than my 964. That is why I didn't bother to push that one. Of course, this one may not have had the power or setup that the one I drove had, but the guy was a lunatic.

We could afford something newer, we choose to own a 964. As adscab911 alludes to, I'm sure there are many people in the general population that dream of owning Porsches from many different models and years.

That said, I think the S2000 is a great car. I can understand someone choosing an S2000 over a Porsche, if they don't want to be bothered with maintaining a used Porsche. Heck, even a new Porsche is likely to be more trouble than the Honda. Similarly, they might prefer the S2000's body style, or its 9000 RPM engine.

Still ... there are cars, and there are 911s. Nothing else looks, feels, sounds or drives like a 911.

As for the S2000 it is just not something I personally find desirable.

Interesting read on both this and the s2ki forum.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. You can't see it more clearly then this. The 964 has qualities that we all love and draw us to these cars. The S2000 also has them and draws its owners in.

One owner on the other board said it best when he said "I'd rather have a s2000 then a new 911".

I'm guessing some of us would rather have our 964's then a new NSX. (I know i'd rather have my 964 Turbo then an NSX)

I think its impossible to say that one car is better then the other. They each are better in certain areas.

Its something to say about the 964 that its still competitive 11 years later.

I just sold a new C5 Corvette, I could have got a new 911 or most any other car
But I wanted the best....and best looking 911 ever..in my opinion it is the 964.
The S2000 maybe a great car to some, but you could not make me drive one.
I looked at them and can tell you they are way down on my list of cars to own. Plus they are torqueless wonders, Unless your driving them like you stole it
So No thanks I'll take a Porsche every time over any Honda. including an NSX

No...the NSX is a fantastic car - and Honda put a lot of effort and expertise into it. I think the entire super car world including Porsche got a serious shock when the NSX was released. Now I'm not saying that I would swap my C4 for one, but it does deserve a lot of respect and even Gordon Murray has one, the god of car engineers.

Go for the 964 and rest assured that you have a beautifully engineered proper sports car that will last and last. Imagine five or ten years down the line - how good will that Honda be then?
