Right enough, just a very small bias towards the porker from this forum...

My 2 euro:I am constantly amazed at the sums of money people are prepared to lose on newer cars in depreciation, and especially high end sports cars. Its almost like a taboo subject, but still, it seems completely acceptable to lose figures like 10 grand between purchase price and trade-in over a couple of years. Weird.
Ok, maybe 996's aren't dropping quite as quickly as that (but not far off it), but most other newer road rockets sure as hell will, even ones with a bonkers VTEC. Just read the end of report section of the long term cars in EVO magazine. Impreza STi lost £3.5 k in 7 months. The Clio V6 lost three times that. You sign the check - Bang - its worth 10% less already..
The 964 has stopped depreciating. It is a modern classic 911. Buy one!

I look around my work car park, at the 2001-2002 Nissan Primeras and Renault Scenics and Toyota Humdrums, and smile in the knowledge that my 911 lurking next to them is the same/cheaper to run, 'cos even they are losing £2-3k+ a year to depreciation. Suckers - they really don't know what they're missing..

Okay, I went ahead and took the liberty of posting a link to this thread on the S2ki.com site. You can find it here:

I actually already posted a s2k vs. 964 thread on s2ki. I posted one first on F-chat as I figured that would be a place to get a relatively neutral answer. I did the deed today. I ordered my new s2000 and I must say I am grinning from ear to ear. Like I stated I truly knew what would be right for me at this point in time. I don't care what people think I truly will enjoy this car. Also like I said I would consider it a win-win situation no matter which car I got!

Happy new car - you sound like a happy man, and that's what it all boils down to after all!
This was an interesting thread: and yes, we are getting flamed on s2ki.

It's hard to make a bad decision between the S2000 and 964, although the S2000 will receive a mild restyle at the end of the year and probably a slight bump in HP.

Honda's in general hold their values very well, as do alot of Porsches. A $35K S2000 are still selling for around $25K, a drop of almost 30%. A $75K 996 can be found for around $45K, a drop of 40% and the 996 values are still falling as most cars are. 996, 993, 964, Turbos, Carerra's, etc are all being hit by depreciation.

How many people grow up dreaming of driving/owning a Honda? Enough said.

Well, I don't care so much about my 964 JUST because it's a Porsche. I truly think it's an awesome performance car. The experiences I've had on the track - where I feel one can accurately judge true performance - have convinced me that there are very few cars that outperform a 964. In particular, with all things being equal, I have yet to see an S2000 outperform a 964. And I've been on the track with many S2000's.

Erick

I have read the thread over on the Hoonda board, but I am afraid there is nothing I can do to help. I don't know anything about S200000's, I don't want to know anything about S2000000's.

Well, except last night there was one in front of me on the A130 going towards Stansted aiport up from the A12. As some of you may know, this is an extremely wide single-carriage road with alot of overtaking points. The Handa downshifted and went into Turbo hardryer mode and pulled out to overtake and I did the same having waited at 4800rpms in second for this to happen. Even though he had the jump (i.e. he initiated the maneuvre) I almost went right up his butt (you can imagine my horror at this point - I wasn't wearing any protection. He definitely seemed to want it though...), had to brake briefly, and then into third and as we went into 5250rpm territory I swear I could have overtaken him overtaking the other cars - but I certainly don't have the guts to do that on the road. So what does this prove? Nothing, apart from as the other thread states that the 964 would seem to be quicker in a straight line. Mind you, the A130 has alot of roundabouts with these 1-2 mile stretches of road between them. The Hunda seemed to have a lot of body roll as we went over the roundabouts at reasonable pace.

One last thing, does anyone know what these S200000's sound like? I tried to listen out for him in front of me but couldn't hear anything even with me at idle with him doing a dragster-style start....are they battery-powered!!???

Erick, I look forward to getting some updates on your encounters with the Hounda guys. If they are that close to the Boxster S then it should be interesting (especially as the Boxster S guys say they can keep up with 800hp Vipers etc....) I really have no idea who is actually faster on the track and of course it will depend on the driver and experience too.

Good luck!
