Question Alarm immobiliser help please?

I'm a new (as of 28 hours ago!) 964 owner so please welcome me into the fold.
My '90 C2 has a porsche labelled immobiliser with a tag key (that you insert into a protrusion from the steering column) and a porsche badged alarm key fob that operates the central locking. I need a Thatcham Cat 2 immobiliser for my insurance. The previous owner told me that the immobiliser was Cat2 but didn't have any documentation to support that.
Does anyone know if what I have is Cat 2? Or how I can find out what the porsche model number is please?

Thanks

Simon,
Just been through this. For 10 years I have got away with the UK Porsche importer fitted system which is not Thatcham approved at all. I had a letter from AFN saying the alarm was Porsche approved. This renewal, Norwich Union insisted on Cat 1 and rejected the AFN letter.

So fitted Cat 1 (go the full hog, not any more expensive really) and fitted a Scorpion system for £400 all in. Note you MUST have this fitted by someone who knows 964s and has done them before. They have to remove old immobiliser and alarm properly, take out seats etc. Grill the company you choose and make sure the fitter has done plenty. Find one via your local specialist.

Cheers,

John

Direct line, my insurer wanted immobilisation as the facility, otherwise they would not insure for theft.
My local OPC in colchester kindly certified the alarm system for me, I then faxed a copy to my insurers for confirmation..
I'm now fully insured, suggest you try this route as the least exensive option.
I was quoted £750 for a full keyless remote entry cat 1 install by OPC, although they can be a tad dear, it gives you an idea of cost ratio.

I like the cheaper idea! I don't see why the tag key immobiliser won't be Cat 2, but I very much doubt that the alarm is any way thatcham approved. How can I tell which models they are?

Hi,

The UK Porsche (AFN) fitted alarm is not Cat 2. AFN Cannot provide you a Cat 2 certificate for this alarm - it must be provided by the alarm manufacturer and signed by the fitter.

Dont want to sound sceptical, but even if an insurance company agrees to accepting a letter from AFN, it doesnt meant that you wont fact problem if you have to claim, they could just say the alarm wasnt what you and AFN told them it was.

Worth fitting a decent modern alarm - I had a clifford fitted and seems to be ok. The fitters I used left the original UK alarm in, and its possible to arm both separately.

Ade.

Have a look at this <a href="http://www.thatcham.org/resources/pdfs/compliance.pdf" target="_blank">Thatcham</a> list. The UK dealer fit immobiliser is listed as "Porsche Immobilser" in the Cat 2 (OE Systems) section. If possible, get your OPC to include the Thatcham certification code (TE2-73/0494) in any letter they do for you. My insurers accepted such a letter as proof of a Cat 2 immobiliser, as the manufacturer is Porsche, and the fitter was an OPC.

Yes, I agree that PA1000 and PA2000 are Cat2, but these are recent alarms and this is not the alarm fitted to 89-92 UK AFN cars. I talked with AFN in depth about this 2 years ago and they were more than happy to Fit a PA1000 or 2000 and remove the AFN fitted original alarm at some considerable cost (1800 pounds I think). Couldnt stop laughing
So it is possible that you have a PA1000 or PA2000, but that was not what was fitted in 1990.

Hi,

Just re-read that you meant the imobiliser and not the alarm, but the same applies, this was not available until 93.

Very useful link, thanks. From the list it says that it was only standard fit after 93 but was available as dealer option/retrofit for all cars. So that's what I've probably got as a dealer fitted option. Does anyone know how I can tell/prove which systems I have? Or can someone who does know which one(s) they've got describe their keys for me please?

PS the insurance company don't need an installation letter - they only need the make and model and approximate date of fitment.
