Talking Best Brake Pads for srteet use???

Hi Folks!

I'll have to change my break pads in a near future and was wondering wich Brand is best for a C2 1991 (the one with the single piston calipers on the rear wheels ). The car is only used as a road car, even if I must admit that I drive it quite hard sometimes (isn't that waht those cars are made for? <img src="graemlins/jumper.gif" border="0" alt="[jumper]" /> ). So my question is quite simple: which brand of pads is the best compromise between stopping performance and brake dust (I quite dislike the black dust on my 17' cupI )

Thanks a lot for your advices, and best regards

One you might look at are the Axxis Metal Masters. They shed very little brake dust, and will stand up to spirited driving. I know one or two who use them as a combination street/track pad.

I agree with Bill. Metal Masters are quiet, minimal dust, give good torque, wear well, and they are cheap. What else is there to want from a pad (unless you're trackin, of course)?

Buy your MM pads from one of the fine sponsers of rennlist.

How well do MetalMasters brake when compared to factory pads? For example, will I need to push the pedal harder to stop the car or not? I considered swapping to MetalMasters several months ago but then asked myself "why...I like the way the car brakes now." Unfortunately, I don't like brake squeal (which I STILL get once in a while) and my wheels need weekly cleaning. Also, is Axxis the only company using the "MetalMaster" name, or are their some companies out there using that name for a different product? Are these the same pads Pelican Parts sells?

Bill,

As far as I know there is only one "Metal Master" brake pad. I want to say the manufacturer used to be PBR and is now Axxis (forget what it was before then). When I used them with Turbo calipers on my SC, with antisqueal pads on the back, they were quiet. The standard PBR/Axxis pads squealed more! I didn't notice any change in pedal effort.

Bill:

Out of curiosity, how do the anti-squeal pads and dampers compare to those on the 964? Are they even remotely similar?

Bill,

The anti-squeal pads cover most of pad back (cut to fit), and stick on the pad itself. As I recall, they were an aluminized plastic type of material, and had something sandwiched and sealed in the middle - could have been air or some super-duper anti-squeal goop. Got them at Autozone.

Axxis is good, but I have come to prefer Performance Friction.

I used the PF "Z" rated pads on the SC for awhile. The "Z" rated pad was a distinct improvement over the stock Porsche pad, as I could use it on the street and, when I was first starting DE's, at the track. Don't recall how much brake dust it left, though.

Hey guys (and of course you too, Melissa),

All you tracksters out there, and not one of you has yet mentioned Pagid.

I hear Blacks are good around town (but I haven't yet had the nerve to try them myself!).

Okay, I won't even mention Orange (oops, I just did ).

Marc:

I would think that the Pagid Black Pad, RS 4-2-1, would be an excellent alternative. Although possibly more expensive than others, when it comes to braking I would tend not to skimp. As to the Orange Pad, RS 4-4, it is a very good first level race pad (if I were going for what I think is the best, I would opt for RS 19, the relatively new Pagid Yellow Pad -- replacing the old and discontinued Yellow Pad, RS 9). My only trepidations vis-a-vis the RS 4-4 Orange Pad for day-to-day use are threefold: (1) they will wear rotors faster than a street pad, (2) as they are race pads what effect, if any (i.e., I am not qualified to give an opinion) will this have upon your liability situation in general and your insurance coverage in specific and (3) noise level.

Bob

P.S. I must add a thought. Throughout these excellent pages there is oftentimes talk about the noise level of certain pads. Buying a Porsche is by itself not an act of restraint or subtlety, many people then add various factory installed and aftermarket components which make the cars stand out even more, people even like loud colors for their calipers (there is an entire cottage industry specializing in custom painting calipers). Why then are people so adverse to brake noise when (legal regulations, of course, aside), in many instances, the noise is caused by a better gripping brake pads that should be seen as a positive thing as they add additional safety, character and uniqueness to the vehicle? In other words, is not noise from certain pads a badge of honor such as a new spoiler, a strut brace, a better suspension, high line wheels and/or tires, etc., etc.?

P.P.S. I forgot to note that I have no affiliation with Pagid.

Because it's annoying, pure and simple. Pagid Oranges in Turbo brakes on my SC had squealing that was significant, loud, and consistent. At the track, before the rotors are warmed up, no problem, there's lots of squealing going on. But on the street, it was just too annoying.

To each his/her own -- one person's annoyance is another's joy (for example, I could fill a room with people who think a Porsche engine is annoying). To me, however, the sound that others find annoying is part of the overall symphony that is a Porsche!

Just my two cents on brake squeal:

1. Yes it's annoying and it's embarrassing. There's nothing worse than driving up next to some guy in a Z06 'Vette and having the brakes squeal and having him give you a look like "what a half *** car". I know, it's superficial, but like Bill G. said it's also annoying...even to me when no one else is around.

2. Brake squeal is caused by a vibration. Vibration means the pads aren't seating properly. Granted, we're probably only talking about thousandths of an inch in motion, but it IS motion, and it shouldn't exist. It CAN'T be helping you brake, it can only be making braking worse...allbeit in a small quantity, but I can't help but wonder if it doesn't over a period of time have some negative effects, particularly on the rotors.

FIRE AWAY!!
