Crunch! Bang! And a big hole in the wallet...
Evening all,
I was in my local independant Porsche Specialists, he has a customer's 1990 C4 in - apparently the car made a crunching noise and then refused to move. Recovered on a low loader, he's taken out the engine and gearbox, and stripped the box to find that the Planet Wheel Carrier has exploded, breaking the Clutch Sleeve in half! There's an awful lot of teeth and assorted metal debris in the bottom of the box. The Planet Wheel Carrier alone is £1200 to replace, this is the second one he's seen within six months. Has anyone had a similar experience?

It's not British slang for anything I know of.
I was a bit surprised that there was a major part of the engine I'd never heard of before.
If my mechanic told me my Planet Wheel Carrier had failed, I'd be moving my car somewhere else!

Sorry guys - it's a manual gearbox, and part of the PDAS system that controls the ammount of torque transferred - when you activate the diff locks, this part of the gearbox does the locking (C4 only).

There was something really wrong with my C4. It made a grinding noise when the car was being moved around. I did not know what it was, and now I have a pretty good idea. I guess I'm glad I got rid of it; the person who bought it didn't seem to be disturbed by the noise. Oh well, it's not like I made any money off of it, but it does seem as if I saved some.
Thanks Barry
