Guys,
Knowing what I know now I wish I had purchased a nice set of Design 92 16 inch wheels, had them painted the same colour as the body and lowered the C4 onto these instead.
Why? Choice of tyres and cost of tyres.
Whilst I enjoy using the 17 inch wheels etc I feel it handles just that little bit better on 16 inch wheels and rubber. I would have 225 fronts and 245 rears. Bring back the SO1s.
Ciao,
Adrian

Should have noticed it was dollars not pounds.

I can still laugh when the UK boys go for their 17" tyres though - bet they won't cost £450!

You are right, mine cost under £300 - well ok it was more like £320 by the time you add the VAT, balancing and 4 wheel alignment....

FYI Dave: full set Toyo Proxes TS-1 (255/40/17 rear, 205/50/17 front) were £399.75 INC VAT fitted/balanced etc.

OK - so maybe 16" vs 17" doesn't save quite so much as I thought... although if you compare the same tyres in 16" / 17" there will be a difference.

Based on Christer's comment, Kumhos do seem cheap. Unfortunately, I don't like them. Mine had brand new ones on the front when I bought it and needed rears about 2K later. I threw away the front pair and replaced all 4 with SO2s because I didn't like the fronts and didn't want the same on the back.

I consider myself unique. I seem to be the only 964 owner who doesn't like Kumhos and the only one who couldn't tell much difference when I tried my car without the airbox lid (to see if I should drill it or not).

Or maybe I'm just odd.

Wink

Dave

Was it the tread you didn't like? Or was it the colour?

Not looking to start a 'why-don't-you-like-kumhos'conversation/argument, but negative feedback is as or more interesting than the positive stuff.

I don't think you are odd. You don't own a Convertible or have a Sludge-sporto-matic gearbox.

Hi,
Definitely the colour - just not black enough.....

The main thing was that it always felt like I had far more grip at the back than the front - always felt like the front wanted to slide away.

At the time, I hadn't had the car for all that long so didn't know that C4s like to understeer anyway and with all the weight at the back, of course I would have more grip there. But when I replaced them with SO2s the front did seem a lot happier - if I hit a roundabout too fast then the front will still try to carry straight on, but on "normal" bends the car feels much more stable.

I suspect it's more to do with driving style than anything else (not sure my driving is all that stylish but I'm sure you know what I mean). But - it was also a bit of an unfair comparison - I had different tyres on the back so wasn't even running as a nice matched set of 4 which I am on the SO2s.

I'm also a bit biased though. Most of my experience is on 2 wheels and with bikes, tyre choice is critical or you just can't knee slide properly so I would never look at "cheap" tyres for the bike. It's hard to forget this mentality with the car, even if the cheaper tyres perform well.

I've got the Kumho 712's on three of my cars...
17" size on the 964, 16's on my 914 and 17's on the family Volvo....I have not tracked the Porsches yet, but I did do a track event with the Volvo at Thunderhill racetrack and I was very happy with the way the Kumhos gripped and held up to me flinging such a heavy car around the track.

For the money, I recommend them.

High,
For the record, $675 for 4 17" tyres, I was quite surprized, have paid up to $980 for a set of these bad boys. <img src="graemlins/oops.gif" border="0" alt="[oops]" />
