You need to remove the gong relay, located near the steering column, and near the brake pedal top.
Disassemble it, it's an easy job, a medium flaat screwdriver is enough.
Then you have to find a generic diode on the circuit. It is a little black barrel, with two terminals, one of these with a white circle: this is the cathode.
Well, now we have to solder another generic diode with the cathode on the other diode's cathode: this is our terminal for "lights on" input.
The anode of the new diode must be accessible, so make a little hole on the gong relay case and pass the anode through this.
Then, you can test this if working: putting +-12V to the gong, as written on its case, it will "gong", and it is the old function.
Now, disconnect +12V and put +12V on the new terminal: it has to "gong": if it does, ok.
To advise about lights on, the car has to provide +12V on it when lights are on.
In my MY91 cab top, there is a gray/red wire on the socket on which gong relay is mounted; it is linked to the position light; connect it to the new wire, re-insert the gong relay, and... that's all.
For other MYs, I'm not sure the gray/red is the correct wire.
But with a multimeter the correct one can be easily found.
Or, waiting until 26/8/2002, when I'm returning from holidey, I can tell you correct color.
I've got my light inside the switch to operate, W00t. But can't find the gong relay itself. Anyone got any pics of the culprit so's i know what I'm looking for .
Is this a US vs. ROW thing? I was checking out the lights on my 964 tonight (just making sure everything was working fine - checking out the brightness adjuster), without keys in ignition, with the door open, and I got the gongs.
do you mean the little light INSIDE the light switch?? If so, how did you get that to work?
Re: gong relay, I can't find mine either. Can't see any relay near the steering column - maybe herbie's is LHD, so its on passenger side for RHS UK cars??

Guys,
You will find the gong relay installed only in 964s which require its use. This is a national requirement. There is no list of which countries required them and which didn´t. Model year also plays a role. All US versions should have them. It is not a LHD RHD issue but a national issue and alarm country code issue.
Ciao,

PS: My 1989 Swiss C4 does not have a gong relay installed.
I did it like this. Dismantle the switch, pull the front off. use a pair of circlip pliers to undo the black screw mount and then once you have pulled the assy clear of the dash look at the rear of the assy.
I used pin 30 for the +ve and R for the -ve return. jumpered these together.
I also used an LED "RS manufactured type 283-0011" instead of the lamp currently installed due to lamps and heat.
The switch now lights up when the headlamps are on, and the ignition is off. Thats the way its beneficial to me. So thats the way I wired it, I've no idea what pin "30" or "R" actually do, and emails I've posted to smartgroups and titanic go unanswered, so if anyone wants to pipe up please do so.
