Question Tyre choice

Hi,

I know I'm potentially opening a can of worms, but I need some advice on tyres. My 1990 C4 currently has some tyre band no one has ever heard of, and I have been told that I really should change them.

I kinow there are many different choices and each has their own strengths and weaknesses, so here are my requirements:

1) Road legal
2) Excellent dry grip
3) Good grip in the wet
4) Suitable for light track use (ie occational sprint and track day)
5) Reasonably long lasting (ie they don't get trashed after 2 hard laps)

I'm not really too worried about road noise or price (unless they are superexpensive)

I currently have the factory standard rims. One option is to buy a set just for track days with some track tyres. Do many people do this or can you get a tyre that is suitable for both.

I look forward to your suggestions.

Regards

IMHO, a 2nd set of wheels with dedicated track tires is the way to go.

I know that there are tires (MPCS perhaps???) that are good double duty tires, but track use will tend to chew up a street tire in pretty short order. I hated having the outer edges of my tires looking so abused.

You can probably find a set of used D90's at a reasonable price, although I think that limits you to 16".

I personally went with 17" Cup 1 replicas for the road, and use my D90s for the tracks. My track tires are Kumho Victoracers.

245/45 all around.

I am running 16x8's front and back, which allow the 245 to fit perfectly on the wheel. I initially ran the factory 16x6's in front, and had a 225 on there, but it bulged a bit. The 245 is a perfect fit on an 8".

I do get a very minor amount of inner fender rub at full lock, but nothing for me to worry about.

BGL - what brakes do you have? I have 16" D90's I want to keep for winter and plan to upgrade to 17" for summer but if I put in a bigger rotors ("disks") the size is limited by the 16" rims. Most bigger rotors call for minimum 17" wheels and I don't want to have to swap rotors (+/- calipers) with every rim swap.

Thanks...Marc

Brakes are 100% stock.
