Default 993 / Big Red Caliper Adaptor Brackets

Guys,
I'm about to fit 993 front calipers to the front of my '90 C2 to match up with the 993 rears fitted by the previous owner. Can anyone confirm that the brackets on the market from various outlets for fitting Big Reds to 964 fronts are the same ones needed to put ordinary 993 front calipers on ???

Thanks,

Jamie

Jamie I don't have an answer regarding that but the big reds were only used on the 964/993 Turbos the 993 uses a smaller caliper. You may find the big red adaptor may not work.

The 993 uses the S4 pad, the Big Red uses a larger pad.

993 front caliper will bolt to the same adaptor as the Big Red and will work with a 304 mm disc.

A Big Red bolted to the same adaptor as above requires a 322 mm disc.

Since you have the 993 rears, you might want to consider using 928 GTS front calipers which are black and use the same (or similar) Porsche font. These use the Big Red size pad and require the 322 mm disc from a 3.6 Turbo.

The issue with the 928 calipers is you will have to buy 2 new crossover pipes, remove the bleeder screws and install the new pipes where the bleeder screws were. You will then remove the original pipe and install the bleeder screws at that end of the caliper. This needs to be done to get the pistons in the caliper oriented correctly since the 928 mounts the caliper in a different position relative to the clock.

I got my adaptors from FVD, and they show one choice for 964's. I used the adaptor to install 993 fronts, and a friend used the same adaptor to install Big Reds.

All true, except 928S4 front calipers(except some rare early versions) are the same as the 993 front calipers except for the noted reversal of the bleeds and feeds because of the disparate mounts (leading vs trailing)

Bottom line just use the 993 fronts and then have no other issues to contend w/

ps Bill G hows the 993 booster/m/c project coming along, the bigger m/c is a plus w/ this type of swap

Thanks everyone, I suspected the brackets were the same, just wanted confirmation. I'll be going for the 993 caliper with 928S4 disc and 964 Turbo proportioning valve combination as recomended elsewhere on the forum. I'll see how I go with the original master cylinder, previous posts suggest this should be ok, but we'll see what the modulation is like with the new set up, though as I do prefer a very firm brake pedal I suspect I might have to change it, especially for track work. I'll let you know how I get on ........................

Bill I didn't mean to flip the lines on an S4 but a GTS caliper.

The part numbers are 928.351.423.03 and 928.351.424.03, very easy to flip the lines nice to have the larger Big Red size pads, not to mention a 322 mm disc with substantially more swept area than a 304 mm disc and an S4 pad- I go through pads less oftem with this set up than with my S4 size set up.

Also the 928 calipers are cheaper than the reds, I paid $279 each for the calipers, $125 each for the discs in 2002 from Crescent City Motors.

The crossover brake lines 928.351.971.01 were $19.24 each from Hendrick also in 2002.

Here is a picture of the parts on my car- note new line below caliper:

Interesting I never noticed that they do charge an extra ~$50 for the red 993ones over the black GTS versions and another ~$160 for black versions of the leading mount Big Red, go figure

Wow! Brakes seem to be the hot topic the past couple days. Thanks Guys, there were a few questions that have been answered for me today alone.

Thanks again,

Duncan
