Question Squeak from Wheels at low speed

Recently, I have noticed a high pitched squeak coming from one or more of my wheels at parking lot speeds. I only hear the noise when the wheels are turned and it only seems to happen after I have driven the car for 10-15 minutes. The noise happens without the brakes applied. I have checked my wheel bearings and everything seems to be ok...no looseness or grinding.

Any ideas or theories come to mind?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Aloha Indycam,
Good idea to try and isolate it. I'll try hanging my wife out the window ; )
I don't think it's a cv joint. I checked them when I investigated the bearings.

Mahalo!

It's your brake pads - I'll bet ya'. Confirm by going the speed that makes the squeak, apply the brake pedal with your left foot but keep the gas to maintain the correct speed - I'll bet that when the brake pedal is pushed your squeak goes away!

My coupe is a terrible sqeaker at under 10mph due to the racing brake pad compound that is used - so I don't do anything about it. If it is the brakes, change pads, add anti-squeal clips, or clean brake dust. Those are the options...

Thanks for the suggestion garrett376. It does sound like brake squeak, but I had never heard of brake pads squeaking without being applied. Does anyone know if this can cause any damage?

Yeah, my coupe is a major squeaker with and without the brakes on at low speed.

It won't hurt anything other than your ability to hear high-pitches noises 10-20 years down the line!

Hi Andy,

This might be a long shot, but still worth investigating.

Not long ago, my car started making a high pitched whine. A bit of detection indicated that one of the front wheels was the culprit. Immediately I began worrying about bad brakes, worn driveshafts or some other expensive break down.

Before going to a mechanic, I decided to take off the wheel to have a look myself. Good idea! Behind the brake disc is a metal shield. Wedged between the shield and the brake disc was a small stone, pretty much working like an old fashioned record player…. and a noisy one too!

Good luck.

Andy,

had the excact same thing and it's caused that the worn brake pads are just rubbing the outer edge of the to much worn brake discs ...

Just might want to look at it. I had new disks and pads installed as both were worn and the squeel is gone ....
