I am currently replacing my roof with a 993 style roof that fits directly over the existing 964 cabrio mechanism.
I have decided, in view of the vast number of horror stories i have heard, that i am going to use the cabrio in Manual format, i.e not use the rear motors, but only use the front motors to lock the cabrio in place.
Both of the cabrio cables have snapped. By the looks of them they must have snapped some time ago.
So, my question is this... what do they do? My roof was functioning ok whilst they were broken (un-beknown to me at the time).
I can only summise that they give the roof-lining some extra tension on the sides, above the door windows...?
I am tempted not to replace them as it will mean that i wont have to use the black plastic buckle that sits on the outside of the roof lining.....
Any thoughts???

Hi Bo, Happy New Year !
I'm intrigued, what the horror stories with using the roof electrically ?
I rebuilt various parts on my roof mechanism. and reset it up. It has since worked flawlessly.
The bit I didn't like was the crap operating switch on the dash console. So I rewired to the now redundant spoiler manual switch.
Regards
Rob
Ps. I got the steering wheel fitted. I'm not totally happy with the prototype hub I made (too long). When I get back to work I'll make a new one, and another one for you, but that won't be later next week.

If you go for a drive without those little eye-bolts hooked up, you'll know exactly why they are there and why they need to be screwed down!
I didn't put them back after replacing my roof - I just forgot to screw them in... and the roof starts to raise up at speed over the window!!! Yikes! I had to drive home with my hand on the roof to keep it from flapping all over the place!

Hi Rob, Happy New Year!!! Hope you had a good one?
I haven't received the new wheel yet and as you can see, if right in the middle of refitting the roof anyway at the moment, so no rush at all for the hub (still really grateful about the offer for making me one, let me know how much i owe you...).
The reason for going manual with the roof is due to reading about half a dozen stories about strutts snapping and ripping through the roof lining (i think Garrett suffered with this himself...?) A couple of people also posted that it's not a matter of 'IF' it breaks but 'WHEN'!!! So, as the roof is brand new, i really didn't want to run the risk of an unnecessary 'big' repair bill...
Happy New Year Garrett. Thanks for the advice about the cables, that makes sense now... Did you buy your cables from Porsche, or did you have them made (i can remember someone posting that they had the cables made at a 'Farming Supplies' wholesaler for a fraction of the price???)
Many thanks for your reply!
best regards...

Hi Bo
Do you know which Struts these are. Most of the roof mechanism is either extruded or cast ali.
If I can find oud which parts snap, I'll plasma out some replacements in steel. They wont snap (but only bend worst case). OK there is a weight difference. If you take the loose change out of your pockets before going for a drive. I don't
think it'll make a lot of difference

I would be inclined to replace those cables to have it all working as it should.
I have the 993 style roof and it does retain these cables and 'buckles'. However they sit underneath the upper layer of fabric and as such are invisible. I don't know the exact way yours is manufactured but I feel my roof requires these to be fitted.
I can email pics if you have any queries.

Hi Rob
Here is the 'arm' that tends to snap, just above the yellow mark...(from the pictures i've seen, usually around three quarters of the way up, around a tapped hole that appears to serve no purpose...)[IMG]
I think Garrett had this problem with his roof mechanism and had to buy a replacement arm at quite some cost!

About to start to put the new roof on, just waiting for the adhesive to set... Can't wait, as my P-Car is looking pretty sad without the roof![IMG]
First time i've ever used clothes pegs... (better not let the wife see that i've written that....)

Thanks Malc
I have just had a good look at the roof lining and there are some insert holes aleady cut. Yep, you're right, the cables do sit underneath on this version instead of on the outside, so i'll have to think very carefully before i start using any adhesive!
I'll bet i'm in for a shock on Tuesday, when i phone the OPC to get a price???

Its a job that must be done right, after all, your going to see it every time you get in, and or put the roof down. They might not be that expensive - let us know.
Anyway, how're you going to get the adhesive to dry in this weather!!? - its about 2*C here, with hailstones...

Well, down here on the sunny southcoast.... ho ho ho! Just kidding, although it has been very sunny here today!
Been working in the garage with an electric heater blowing... garage temp was showing 15.2 degs...
Have you got a pic of your roof? It would be useful to see the actual rear profile from a side view...

Rob
reference your steering wheel centre....
My old '67 912 steering wheel had an embossed leather centre, which must be a replaceable part. It would really suit the centre of your new steering wheel!
I'll get a price tomorrow, when i get a price for the new cables...
best regards

Hi
Was an avid follower of your thread, as I have had issue with my roof in the past.
I have the original 964 roof and have noticed that one of the cables that runs through the roof has snapped. I have removed them both even though one has not broken. Now which ones do I order the 993 or 964 . The unbroken cable is 62.5 centemeters long end to end.
I have posted this under the 993 style roof thread also as I want to order them on Monday, any idea how much they are. I am in Jersey and the OPC is a b*asta*d on pricing, captive market.
Thks
Rob
