Default Oil ???

Hi All,

I can't seem to get a consensus of opinion on what oil to use.
Should I use mobil 1 ? if so which one?
Synthetic or mineral oil ?
I have been using Castrol RS 10w60, some say I shouldn't,
some say its fine.

Help!

Rob,

When in doubt, consult the oils Porsche recommends. Porsche's most recent list is for European brands, what I've posted here previously is the North American list.

Hi Rob
When Camtune, inSurrey, serviced my car a few months back, they used fully synthetic, which should provide greater protection for an engine that is not started every day, as i understand that fully synthetic oil does not drain from parts, but leaves them coated, thus offering more protection when the car is cold... I'm no expert, but i have heard this before...
cheers!

You won't get a concensus as the "best" oil as it depends upon how you drive and temperature (and not to mention personal bias or opinion). I'm lucky to live where the weather varies between 10 and 40 °C year-round (that's 50 and 104 °F for us Yanks), so I don't have to worry about "cold" weather starts (hey folks here think it's "cold" if it's 10 °C). As one car is for track use and the other sees some pretty spirit driving and warmer temps (and I'm lazy), I use Mobil 1 15W-50 in both.

Hi Rob,

This subject is one of those good old chestnuts that repeatedly comes up. There's no real answer, as has already been said. There are many variables which might determine the right answer for your car but I'll give you my 2c for what it's worth.

Firstly, your question about Mobil 1 - and which one. I believe that Mobil 1, in ALL varieties, is fully synthetic. The variations are in viscosity only. For the UK climate it seems to be the consensus that something around the 10W/40 is about right. The synthetic oils often seem to be "thinner" than non-synthetics and some users complain that the "thinness" promotes leaks.

Personally, I favour the Castrol GTX Magnatec which is, I believe, a semi-synthetic. The 10W/40 variety is available at Halfords. I think JZ Machtech recommend Magnatec for the 964 engines.

Your current choice of the Castrol 10W/60 seems a bit extreme. I can't imagine why you would need a 60 unless your engine was very worn and you were trying to maintain a decent oil pressure. I would guess it's difficult to find too - and expensive!!

I suspect there might be lots of other replies - get ready for the rush!!!

Regards

Dave

Hi Dave,
I'm using Cartrol RS 10w60 because I checked the oil level and found it to be below the min mark.
The only synthetic oil I could get "there and then" was the 10w60. I'm about to do a full oil service, so I just wanted to know what oils mainly to avoid. I think I'll use Mobil1, but there different viscosities of Mobil 1. My engine has done 80K miles. I don't know if any major work has been carried out on it. I have oil leaks, but get no drips on the driveway?! So i'm looking for an oil for a "used" engine that going to give me the maximum protection in a often driven vehicle. Which doesn't get "hammered" ( only the occasional blast for the noise and "grin factor").

If you have a fairly standard car and it experiences normal street use I would also use Castrol Magnatech or around the 10-40W mark...

Rob,

Like you I wasn't too sure, so checked and was advised to run my 964 on semi-synth. Straight to Halfords and I'm now using 10-or15W40.

Best wishes

Julian

I am also using what the previous owner used - Mobil 1 fully-synth but 5W30 as it is freakin' cold here now.
