Question Porsche Fasteners

Before I run off and pay 1000% of a reasonable cost for some stupid screws...

The PET lists many of the fasteners (screws) used on our cars by some odd sizes - eg, a screw (900 143 159 07) as "4,8 x 19 mm". I've never seen a metric screw at anything other than a "nominal" size (eg, 4 mm or 5 mm by 15 mm or 20 mm). 19 mm looks to me to be like 3/4 inch rounded off and 4.8 mm could be 3/16".

Does anyone know if the screws really are some wacko metric or just a metric equivalent of a typical english screw? While the Swiss and Germans may be able to run out to the hardware store and find a nice selection of true metric screws, it's a bit more difficult to get them over here.

I work in an engineering world where everything is done in metric and have NEVER heard of anything other than what yoiu suggest, 4mm, 5mmX15, 20 etc. Couldn't cost too much to run out to home depot, pick up a couple screws and try it out?

Porsche does not make any fasteners as far as I know. There are two excellent German fastener manufacturers, and Porsche shops fasteners on the international market just to drive down prices from the domestic suppliers. I have run across whacky sizes on 911s - try to find the 17 mm thread die needed to fix a buggered alternator thread on early 911s. I have completely dismantled a 911 twice, and don't recall any unified (US customary) fasteners. They could sneak inside some OEM parts, but I doubt it.

Jeremy, I probably have the screws at home in may large supply of various screws, nuts, bolts and other stuff. I was curious about the sizes and the english-to-metric conversion, it seemed like our proper German cars were using English sized parts (herecy!). Given all the odd proper metric parts I've had to get over the years (seat bolts for example), it just seemed odd that the body panels would use English standards...

For some reason Porsche copied GM, Ford, Chrysler, etc. from the late seventies and used some odd ball sized automotive fasteners. I'm sure there is an almost plausible reason why they did this but I couldn't find anyone that could think of one when I was sourcing replacement fasteners. If you don't want to buy a box of M4.2 x 1.41 x 13mm screws (FYI. Spaenaur and MetricMCC sell them and can get stuff to you next day) try somewhere that sells parts for a '77 Olds or the like.

Hi guys
I work for Würth, the Worlds largets supplier of fixings, fastenings and workshop consumables...which just happens to be a German company and supplys certain products to Porsche... Don't be too misled by people trying to overcharge you for fasteners, i have attached a PDF of a simple Imperial/Metric conversion chart for screws. Europe has used Metric for...ever... Predominantly, the fasteners used on Porsches will be standard Metric sizes and you can use the attached chart to match up the desired sizes...
Hope this helps...
Best regards

It is quite common to find 4.2/4.8mm screws, however, it would pose no problem is you were to use a 5.0 x 20mm screw instead of 4.8 x 19mm (the 4.8 is actually a direct replacement for an imperial size 10 x 3/4...)
best regards

A simple "Google" gives the answer (!), "Shop No.8 x 0.75 (4.2mm x 19mm) Pozi Pan Self-Tapping Screw".

You beat me to it. Standard screw gauge sizes converted to metric.
