starter motor or connection?
Hi guys,
Went to start the car after a week in the garage and initially it fired briefly but stalled. Retried but got a horrible whirring and no engine revolution. Retried and the same. Switched back off and on and fired up first time. Looking at past threads is this likely to be a starter on the way out or poss bad connector straps. Where to look? Over the past year ive had the odd issue but now the car is used on a weekly rather than daily basis its more frequent. Battery is fine as only 6months old and on a battery maintainer.
Any suggestions to troubleshoot or prices for new starter. Best i've seen in UK is £208 +VAT for a Bosch recon on exchange basis (or £150 for a non-named recon from type 911).
Cheers
Giles.

I had the same problem with my starter. Sometimes would start no problems, but quite often I would get the whirring sound. I replaced the motor with a recon unit from Bosch - Big difference, cranks the engine with real ease. Pretty easy to replace.

Easy to first check that all cables are fine... and by check I mean to get under there and look at the grounds and positive cables.
In my case the positve cable had only a few threads left in the connector and not enought juice was getting to the starter... this was at the starter end. Check the grounds for the same condition.
I ended up wasting some $$ on a new starter... I try to justify the expense by telling my self that it was a 13 year old starter, most likely on its way out... but it was not... it was still good... oh well...
