Default Hi All ! A Newbie signs in

Hi,
I've just got my first Porsche, and still grinning like a cheshire cat !
Its a 1990 964 C2 Tip Cab LHD with a wide body conversion. I noticed its has a
few oil leaks, but if it doesn't consume/leak too much I'll leave well alone.
I do have some problems with the dash gear shift indicator lights though.
No lights on at all ! The powered top also doesn't work, but thats a minor problem (hopefully).

I have a couple of questions.

What oil to use ?

My ABS lights takes about 45 seconds to go out, is that normal ?

Is the LITTLE filler cap under the fuel flap the washer bottle filler ?

Sorry for all the questions.
Regards to All

Rob

Congrats on your 'new' 964. Welcome to Rennlist.

I'll let the C4 owners answer the ABS light question.

I use conventional 20W 50 on my C2. Porsche does recommend various synthetic oils. There will be many opinions as to what oil to use. Here are a few oils that are referenced on pca.org that might give you a start:

June, 2001, Tech Bulletins list the following approved oils:
Castrol/Syntec 5W-50, Mobil 1 0W-40 5W-40
Sun Oil/Sunoco Synturo Gold 5W-40
Texaco/Havoline Formula 3 Synthetic 5W-40
Valvoline/High Performance Synthetic 5W-30

The little filler cap is for washer fluid.

Hope this helps,

Jay

Welcome Rob!!

Your profile doesn't mention your location and you'll find it really helpful when it comes to getting answers. Rennlist is visited by Porsche owners around the world and many answers to your questions will be irrelevant or even wrong if your location is not known.

Despites Jay's kind suggestion to leave the ABS question to the C4 owners there is no real point since the ABS on a C4 is completely different to the ABS on your (C2) car.

If you haven't seen any reference to it yet, it's worth getting a copy of Adrian Streather's book on the 964 - it's called "Porsche 911 - an Enthusiasts Companion" and is available from a number of sources including the publisher (Bentley - www.bentleypublishers.com), the PCGB Bookshop and Amazon etc. Adrian is a moderator and regular visitor to the 964 forum and will often contribute on many technical issues.

I'm always interested in wide body conversions since I've got one!!

As has already been said, pictures are a necessity here!!

Regards

Dave

Hi Rob,

Welcome to our little 964 community!!! I am sure you will find lots of support and good ideas here.

The ABS light on my C4 goes out immediately, but if my memory serves me right, I do think I have read somewhere that it can take a little while to extinguish. As suggested, get Adrian Streather's book ASAP. It will help you no-end to understand end enjoy your car.

Take care… and let’s get some photos!

Rob, welcome to the board!

It's quite normal for the ABS/PDAS lights to shay lit for up to a minute on the first start of the day. If they stay on too long, the buzzer will sound. What's happening is the system is hydraulic & needs to be brought up to the correct pressure. Once up to that pressure, the lights will go out.

It was late when I answered that post... Dave, thanks for reminding me it's a C2 and not a C4!

My ABS light on my C2 goes out immediately after the car is started...

Maybe I'm biased, but the 964 series has the best 911 rear end of all...

The car has had very little use for over a year. A local dealer took it in as a PX and then couldn't shift it. I saw it about 2 weeks ago by chance, and fell in love. So with my wallet considerably lighter (I also had to buy a diamond ring as "compensation" for SWMBO). The top after sorting out the parking brake switch is now working, and getting better with every operation. I've still to sort the shift postion indication lights in the speedo. I'm just beginning to learn how to drive the car, and get a small insight into what its capable of. I think I'll have many hours of fun during this learning process.

To answer your question about the filler cap next to the gas cap, yes that is for the washer fluid. Be careful you don't fill it too full as it will tend to come back up on fast acceleration (which I would assume would be a common occurance). When it comes up it will drain out behind the wheel and you will see the fluid around the caps. If you have the optional high-intensity washer system there is a small resevoir on the other side of the trunk.

Rob... Welcome from another newbie (got mine in August)... Car is a beauty, can't wait to see more picts of it.

I have one bit of advice (newbie to newbie) LEAVE THE TOP ALONE... If it isn't adjusted properly, it has plenty of power to break itself pretty good! Oh and watch your fingers while in the manual mode!
