Ok thanks for all this info chaps I do appreciate your help,Now this is the way I see it, I drained 1 litre but like some of you have said its not enough,I was told by a recommended specialist today that with the temp on the first mark of the gauge (not the very first one just above where the needle starts but the next one up)
that you need between 1/2 to 3/4 reading on the dipstick and oil gauge so when the oil expands with more heat it will fill up the system without throwing all the oil out, at the moment I'm on the full oil gauge mark on the first temp mark.I reckon I need to remove about 1/3 of a litre making a total of 1.3 litres..great but not as bad as a 993 rennlister I read about here who had to remove wait for it... 3 litres and thats UK litres!!
Kev my car needs a 24K service theres no way I am going to you know who this guy I spoke with really knows his stuff he knew how to install oil into a 911,let me get a few things out the way mate and we'll meet up at the beagle pub.
cheers
Paul

You'll see the gauge fluctuating from about 1/3 to 2/3 while driving, depending on the oil temp and engine speed and probably whether the moon is in the seventh house. Remember, though, the gauge doesn't really tell you much that's useful while driving. But, when you stop for at least 1 minute, idle, HOT, on level ground, as long as the gauge doesn't read over full, you're golden.
If anyone ever compiles a 964 FAQ this is all you'd need on the chapter headed 'How the @#$* do I tell how much oil I've got?' Jewel of a quote!
(Actually I might change the '1/3' in the first line to 'the red zone', but other than that....)

Up here in Canada, we tend to buy stuff in metric and talk about it in Imperial. "Yeah, I just put 60 litres of gas in my car, but it gets about 30 miles to the gallon, that's not bad, eh?" Maybe that's where an Imperial litre would come in handy...
