I can see clearly now....
Had my cracked windscreen replaced today and treated my vision to a new set of wiper blades. Luckily it rained on the way home to give me a chance to try them out

I'm going to have to replace my badly pitted windscreen before the rainy season starts. Vision is impossible in the rain in its current condition even with new wiper blades.

ST, mine has to be done in addition to removing the rust spot under the seal (you are familiar with it). Any idea who will be doing your job? I had someone lined up, but they seemed so surprised and disbelieving when I stressed it must be bonded per factory book, I am having second thoughts and wamt an alternative!

had mine replaced today as well
before it was actually installed, the shop allowed me to treat 3 areas of rust on the cowl that had begun to develop. i would never have known as the gasket covered all evidence of any rust.
car looks "newer"

I have a quote to take care of the rust from Body Style down here in San Jose. The owner is a Porsche guy - he has a 1973 911S with 12,000 miles! German Autobody in Sunnyvale were also recommended to me. I'm going to get a quote from them also. The Body Style quote was about $1000 plus $700 for the windscreen (ouch!).

for replacing the glass:
winshield(with the band, antenna and airbag shield) = $1090 from the dealer
gasket = $150
labor, tax etc. = $100
i had received several, much lower quotes, but they were not using OEM parts nor did they offer any sort of lifetime guarantee.
for treating the rust:
dremel = $50
proper attachment = $2.99(needed two of them)
rust dissolver gel= $8(for the minute crevices i might not get into)
sandpaper, tape and newspapers = left over from painting the hubs
unlike your situation, the rust on my car was mostly surface rust, so no cutting or welding was necessary. but given another year or so, i probably would have noticed some serious blistering from underneath the gasket in one area which may have required some bonding. i wish i had taken pics, but i was in a rush to get their shop and get it done.

I was told mine was just surface rust and would be an easy fix once the windshield was removed. The bonding I was referring to was the glass itself not the body work. My understanding is that most cars the glass is just placed in and held by the gasket whereas the factory manual specifies our cars have it glued in place.

from i understood, all windshields from '95 - up are glued in, and then a decorative moulding is used around the edges. for my car, the windshield was glued to the gasket only, which like you said, holds the glass in place.
perhaps i'm mistaken?
