what are the 90s head gasket update machine shop costs?
Hi Guys,
I am curious what it costs for a machine shop to "update" the cylinders and heads to have the gasket that's installed in the later cars. Does anyone know the cost for the machine shop to do this?
I can handle the rest of the labor up to the point of delivering the parts to the machine shop - just not the machining itself. I'm checking out a 1990 car that did not have the update done since the leak was so slow (bummer!). Just curious what the going rate is these days!
Thanks!

The PO's paperwork for my '91 C2 indicates that the total cost for the complete reseal of the engine by the local dealer was $7449.68 in 2001. Of that, the cost for the machine shop cylinder head exchange was $550 each ($1100 total). The other big-money items ($100+) were an exchange for a rebuilt distributor ($424.35), head gasket ($188.93) and temp. sensor ($107.57). The total for parts was $1668.68 and for labor was $5781.00. Obviously, diy is the way to go if one has the skills, manuals, tools, and courage called for. I hope this is helpful. Good luck.

Oops. The distributor was a second job, so the $424.35 is NOT included in the above totals. And while I'm at it, the third job was the replacement of valve seals for $391.51, also not included in the above totals. The good news is that the dealer provided this long-term customer 10% discounts on parts and labor. The car had 40,600 miles at the time.
