Default Wheel questions

I have broken one of my RUF alloys and since it appears my chances of finding a single wheel are slim to none I will need to replace it with something else.

Fikse wheels ( FM10) have a good reputation in the USA and are on my wish list. I believe they are made to order; Anyone know how long they take to process the order. How much do they cost? and what offsets did those using them decide on? ( I will be sticking to 17ins).

In the meantime I am considering unrefurbished 993 or Boxster 17ins wheels as they are plentiful and cheap ( the owners all seem to want 18ins wheels) and if I break one are easy to find singles. The problem is that the fronts are usually 7ins width, and while my 225 Michelin PSC will fit, I would prefer 8ins width. Apart from the cosmetic issues is there any reason not to use my undamaged front RUF speedlines, which are 8ins width and whatever is available in 9ins at the rear?
Are there any preferences 993/Boxster wise with regard to lightweight.

No, but I will do. I originally purchased the RUFs from Jasmine. I will try for a single wheel but I'm not very optimistic.

Tony,

Have you tried RUF directly in Germany?

Fikse's come in a variety of offsets, are made to order, and delivery time depends on the season and other work. Figure 2-3 months lead time and around $2700-$3000, give or take, on cost. Look their web site over to see the finish options. There's been some discussion in other forums on the finishes and what's worked on track wheels.

The only issue with having two different styles of wheels is that they look odd, but for interim usage, who cares?

Thanks Kevin,

+ve, they are cheap. £2K less than Fiske
they are very light

-ve they don't appear to fit 964's but nothing a man with a hammer can't fix and since he's already going to have a go at one wing , he may as well do the others.
it will mean buying 4 new tyres.

Sorely temptepted, I need to make a descion when I'm sober.

Tony,

The Fikse FM10 is a very nice wheel/rim. I did quite a bit of looking around before deciding on them. Figure about $700 per wheel, but don't forget some of the extras such as anodized the lugnuts ( a must to keep it all coordinated). Fit and finish of the FM10 is fantastic, and the machining top notch. They really look as expensive as they are Below a picture to give you an idea.

I vote for the 17" 993 Cups. They may be a little narrow up front but are lightweight, provide ample brake cooling and look fine on our cars. I believe they run 19 lbs up front and 21 lbs at the rear.

The best deals, IMHO, can be found in the Rennlist classifieds. I found my Fikse's there for about $2K (plus shipping) in the right sizes: 8 x 9-1/2 x 17 with offsets of 55mm f and 50mm r. The optimal offset for a wide set of 964 wheels, according to one of the PCA Tech Advisors, is 52mm f and 47mm r.

Those black Kinesis K27's currently being advertised also represent a very good value at $1,800 + shipping. They feature 7" fronts but are high quality and appear to be in tip top condition.

Good luck! Need to start cutting back on the kibble.

Point:Counterpoint .... I don't like the 993 Cup II wheels for track usage, as I've seen a few sets with cracked spokes. It's not prevalent, as many use them successfully on the track, however, wheels, like brakes and a number of other key parts, are not something I want to chance something going wrong with. Before I got my Kinesis K17's (8x17 and 10x17), I considered Cup 1's in 8 and 9.5, however, new they were more expensive (and that's from a discounting Porsche dealer) and certainly heavier than the 3 piece wheels.

Bill,

8x17's are 51mm offset, and 10x17's are 54mm, and I use a 6mm spacer for an effective 48mm offset.
