Default Speed Pulse for GPS

What is the best location to grab a speed pulse for a GPS on a 1991 964? Can you go right off of a Wheel Speed sensor? or is there a source in the cockpit?

Thanks,,

Just out of interest - why does GPS need a speed pulse? My GPS system knows how fast I'm going because it can tell from my position change. What does GPS do with the speed signal?

It calculates where you're likely to be when the GPS signal is temporarily lost - for example in a long tunnel or driving in the city with tall buildings. Should be quite useful, an advantage of a fixed system over portable.

On Alpine and Kenwood GPS it must have the pulse to provide guidance. It can display your position without the pulse, but it wont enter guidance mode.

Lon, what kind of GPS unit are you considering for your 964?

Speed pulse - afaik, the speedo has a speed pulse; that's where my cruise control gets it from anyway.

Unforutantley we tried the green wire from the speedo, it has speed readout, but not pulse. The GPS must have the pulse or it refuses to function. I went through the exact same mess with my Pacifica, it was a pain, but now it works great.

There is a speed pulse fed to the spoiler control module, this signal is what the Becker Traffic Pro uses. I don't remember, and can't find on the web right now, which wire it is exactly. This is very easy to get to, just up above the passenger footwell.

Sorry, another dumb question... can you put a Becker TP in a 964 and if so, how. I've got one in my 996 and I actually prefer it to a map screen. TIA,

In the 993, the speed pulse wire going to the spoiler module is white/red. Good luck!

Chip,

Thanks, I would guess it would be the same. We have it working now, but I am certain we need to change it. We went from the Pulse Generator module for the RF wheel. But now it is causing a weird minor flutter on the ABS as the car comes to a stop. So I know that isnt good.
