Default Any DIY guide to replace voltage regulator?

Hi all,

Any know if there’s any guide or video to replace the voltage regulator?
Got new battery, tested the voltage on idle, under load… can’t reach 13v
slow and long crank after a day sitting without tender
Safe to assume it’s the voltage regulator?

thank you

How much AC voltage do you get? The voltage regulator's primary function is to turn AC voltage created by your alternator into car and battery friendly DC voltage.
Changing the regulator is pretty straightforward. You need to get to the back of your alternator. There are tons of instructions on this forum. The regulator is at the back of your alternator held by a couple of bolts.
How old is your alternator?

There is a DIY here. It is a major PITA to get the alternator out but once you have access, swapping the regulator is easy. In my experience poor charging is often caused by the carbon brushes in the regulator being worn down so that they no longer maintain contact with the rotor. Also, there are three wires attached to terminals inside the black dome at the back of the alternator .Make sure you properly identify where these wires go. You don't want to have to do this twice! (Ask me how I know).

I just got this smart multimeter that auto detects what to measure… doesn’t seem like I can manually change to AC mode to check .. should I get another multimeter for that 🤔

from reading the past service receipts.. doesn’t seem like the alternator was ever worked on. I assume it’s from 1990

The spline tool and its extension handle are in the original tool kit if you have it.
