Default chip advice?

hi 964ers
been offered a chip (for £100)... a question or two to the slightly less mechanically challenged amongst us... how much does the chip improve BHP / performance?... are there different types? ...will it cause any damage? is it a big job to install? ....the old girl is a '90 C2 (totally standard) and pretty **** hot off the mark as she is, but tends to splutter a little in high revs (especially 3rd & 4th gear) which can be a little off-putting at times...

any help would be great

Depends where the chip is from. Is it an off the shelf item (eg Superchips) or was it mapped specifically for a car?

Easy enough to install - ECU is under passenger seat - and shouldn't do any harm. You won't see much change in BHP but the engine's characteristics may alter. It certainly won't help your spluttering problem - that could be a number of things, possibly dirty injectors.

I'd try it before you buy.

Cheers

sorry to be a pain... but if it doesn't improve BHP what is it supposed to do?

cheers

Mine changed the driving characteristics, ie. more torque lower in the rev range, better driveability.
Although, I do feel an increase in power at the upper limit.

As Phil said, try before you buy.

I said you won't see much change - maybe 8bhp which is hardly noticeable.

Reduce fuel mileage and shorten the life of your catalytic converter.

Every time someone dyno tests an off-the-shelf chip they end up with pretty close to a zero % gain. The difference between stock and off-the-shelf is always less than the error rate for the dyno. Unless your having a chip custom programmed for your car while it is on a dyno don't bother.
