964 C4 Test Drive
Hi to all members, I'm new to the list and hopefully about to be a first time Porsche owner. I'm off to test drive a 911 C4 (1993, 55k miles, lhd, full history) at the weekend, what should I be looking/listening for to make sure its not a lemon? I've done years, and I mean years, of research and know that a '93 car shouldn't have the usual oil leaks or problems with the dual mass flywheel but is there anything that others have experienced that I should check for?
I look forward to hearing from other members and can't wait to at last become a member of the Porsche owning 'club'.

Well, I hope John's PM said don't do that!
Find a recommended independent specialist. If you let us know where the car is, people can probably recommend one. General places like RAC, AA etc. will be able to tell you whether it's been resprayed - but half of them will be lifting the bonnet to check the engine. Well, maybe not quite that bad, but you get the idea.

On thing I like to recommend checking on a 964 is the operation of all the warning lights. Get familiar with what should light up when the key is turned to the ignition 'on' position. Check and familiarize yourself with that section of the owners manual first before turning on the ignition.
It seems to be more and more common for owners to just yank the bulb out of the warning light instead of fixing the problem causing the warning light to come on in the first place.
Most of these cars will still drive even if abused since they are so well engineered. Being able to drive a solid, well maintained car before or after driving this one will help to determine what kind of shape the car you are looking at is in.
Good Luck,
Jay
