heatshields
hello,
while working under my 90 c2 noticed that the sound deadning material is starting to flake of on the heatshield panels by the timing chain area and valve covers. the silver side is perfect on the outside just the foam with black rubber covering is falling apart. has anyone else had this problem. seeing that the heat deflecting silver is intact, do you think it matters about the foam. is this for making the engine quieter. thanks

Mine was completely gone too. I replaced it using aftermarket heat shield rated for placement near exhaust systems. I am not still lear if the insulation is there for thermal insulation or for noise reduction. I just tried to get the car back close to original without busting the budget on dealer replacements.

I don't run the under tray and the engine does not seem any louder to me. I think the more the air can flow over the engine the better. If I was doing repeated stints at 150+ I would probably put it back on. Here in LA the freeway average speed is probably closer to around 20 mph...

Just as a FYI, the 993 left the heat shields off and they don't have a problem. But if you want there are some after market solutions.
Here is a Heat Sheet on a 993 w/ headers

Guys, Thanks for the info on a subject that has been driving me a bit batty. My heat sheild rattles at idle and I asked the dealer to replace the hardware as I had read that would stop the rattling. It seems to have gotten worse. The dealer is an hour away so just removing the darn thing will be great. Jon, read with great angst your running problems and glad the coils did the trick and you are back on the road.

Hello Dutch,
Two years ago I had a Porsche specialist insist that I leave the engine pan of. Reduced heat he said. After getting under the car to clean up the engine, I like you saw the crumbling foam on the heat shields. Assuming this was a noise abatement component, I removed it all. I like the mechanical sound of the older 911's so I don't miss this stuff. I The silver covered panels are still there, I just pulled off all the foam. It did not take much effort as most of it was falling apart. The car only had 36,000 miles but I suspect it was just the age of 1991 foam material. Any way - after an additional 14,000 miles - no ill effects and at least I believe the car runs a good bit cooler. When I read about premature valve guide wear in some 911's - I think cooler is better.
