Those cows with their tinkling cow bells look nice, but they do cover the road in muck. That much then gets thrown up by the car in front of you...

The way home: more crappy weather, and lots of traffic jams near Munich. Still it was a great trip, with lots of exciting driving in good company

Cheers,

JW

Looks like a great trip. I'll have to go over that pass one time.

Many thanks for the nice photos.

The Stelvio pass is highly recommendable. Lots and lots of hairpins, great views over the surrounding mountains, and usually not too much traffic.

It's also nice to stay overnight at the top of the pass. For one, it gives you the opportunity to go up the top of the hill before the pass opens

Cheers,

JW

One question...what time of the year was this?

I know we've screwed up the weather and this year is particularly bad, but was this early spring or "summer"?

The trip started on July 4th; we came back on July 10th. Dunno if that's "summer", but according to our resident expert (the Elise driver who has been living in that region for half his life) this kind of weather is very unusual.

To illustrate, the same trip was organised last year, at almost the exact same dates. That time there was sunshine, and people with fixed roof and no aircon really suffered.

Cheers,

JW

Thanks for the pics JW. What is a 'PMR'? A walky talky, a mobile phone or.........?

Default PMR

A PMR is a Portable Mobile Radio. Basically a walkie-talkie

It transmits at 500mW power, which gives a more than sufficient range when travelling in convoy. It uses a frequency range that may be used without getting a permit.

Cheers,

JW

We were there at the end of June, and the weather was great - I drove most of the time in bare feet. First rain we met on the whole trip was at Nordschleiffe, surprise surprise.

The stelvio lived up to expectations..especially finding the tunnel in which the Miura met its sticky end in the Italian job...

Biggest surprise was the herd of cattle in the road at the top..although we managed not to get our cars as Poo'd-up as you, JW.
