Default uggh, can't believe I scuffed my wheels - refinish possible?

Today I had a pre-senior moment (I'm far from that age, but it makes me wonder!) after stuffing myself at lunch. I pulled out of a parking spot and heard some unfavorable noise thinking I ran over something, only to find I had abutted the curb with my right rear wheel. Darn!

Does this require a complete refinish... or is it possible to polish out?? A little fine grit sand paper and rubbing compound??? (yes, the wheels could use a re-finish as the previous owner(s) took a major chunk out of the edge of the rim somehow - I did the part on the spokes!!!!)

Looks like a refinish to me Garrett,I tried buffing mine but they have clear coat that rubs through easily if you are not careful and leaves a cloudy look.

Good luck

Ouch...I feel your pain.

The car is totally ruined now garrett, if you want I can take her off your hands and ease the suffering. Just let me know where to send the tow truck....

Hi Garette,
Just sand, prime, and spray paint the outer part of the rim.
Hope this helps Sam

There are marks it looks like from an earlier experience with a tire machine. I would say just refinish the wheel.. Cost is just a little over $100 with no really deep gouges....

I was curious how those marks on the outside could have happened... thanks for the insight!

And Howard... not yet.... not yet...

To refinish them, what's the color? I think I saw it posted here at one time. THanks!

Garrett:

Ealily fixed, but a bit of work. Here is my "can't fail" method:

1) Wet sand (240 grit or finer), until you have the finish smooth (don't get too greedy, the later steps are pretty forgiving of light scratches)

2) Use roof flashing (4" wide aluminum flat strip, hardware store item), and fashion a cylindrical ring the same diameter as the rim. This will fit perfectly in the crevice between the tire (tyre, for the UK guys) and the rim, and keep spray off the tires).

3) "Wurth" silver spray is the correct color (colour). Spray 2 even coats, don't let it run. If you do, sand back down again.

4) Wurth clear is lacquer, and "wurthless", IMHO. I use Minwax clear gloss polyurethane spar varnish (in the spray can, Ace hardware sells it). Spray 2 wet coats. Don't fret about the color distortion, in goes away after a day in the sun.

I have done this method going back many years and many cars. The clear urethane will outlast the factory clear coat, and will bead water even if you never wax it.

Springer3 - sounds like a great plan! One question - where do you get Wurth products - at the auto parts store? Or is this an online order?? Thanks for the great tips everyone... I'll post my results once I find this wurthwhile product!!!

I get mine at the Bnz store where I buy Mercedes parts. I have seen it advertised in mail order places, but don't recall which ones (Griots for one, IRRC). Send me a PM if you can find any, and I will ship you a can or two.

I missed the bad curb rash on my first visit. That wheel is Wurth finishing just to get rid of that!

The Wurth paint is no longer available. An exact replacement is Einszett Silber

I did that to one of my brand-new wheels on the first day of driving. I figure it is probably going to happen again so will have them refurbished a few years down the line....

You might also compare prices, etc., with Pelican.
