coupe roll bar and cage options - pictures anyone?
Hi everyone!
I searched the archives, and found a lot of pictures of cabrio's with roll bar mountings, but how about coupes?
Joey B - do you have any pics of your setup?
I am curious how the DAS SportBar mounts to the seat-belt points - I hear those are nice bars.
And, what is the difference between a sunroof and non-sunroof bar/cage? Is it headliner clearance?
Thanks for any pics and information as usual!!

custom cages? or the store bought kind?
these are of my CroMo Custom cage in the cup car (soon to be removed)
durring it's construction
sorry for the large size
http://forums.rennlist.com/upload/wt...ps_car_014.jpg
Crossbar
front and top bars (we could still get the headliner back in)
http://forums.rennlist.com/upload/wt...ps_car_015.jpg
B-Piller Tie in (bolted) - this tied in the cage & provided the 3 point mounting for the stock belts. A nice peice of work
http://forums.rennlist.com/upload/wt...ps_car_020.jpg
Front Lognitudinal tie it to the stock mounting plate in the 92 AM cup car
http://forums.rennlist.com/upload/wt...ps_car_016.jpg
side view - the top of the cage is totally tucked up out of the way
http://forums.rennlist.com/upload/wt...ps_car_022.jpg
doing it this way is a little more invasive but the end result is worth it (and the peice of mind)

You could also visit any PCA/POC drivers education event to see roll bars and roll cages. in person. For roll cages, the Safety Devices cage is popular around here. It has plates that weld to the sills and the cage is then bolted to those plates. For the DAS roll bar, it bolts side-to-side where the seat belt spools (behind the trim) are, then the back legs bolt in where the rear seat backs, which are removed for the installation, are. For awhile the DAS rollbar wasn't legal for club racing, however, I hear chatter that maybe it is now legal (I'd confirm with PCA if considering it). While you may not have racing in mind, if you plan to take a car on the track, knowing the roll bar/cage would be legal for the rigors of racing, has merit.
Are you planning on buying a 964 coupe? I think I have a picture of the DAS bar on another computer, I'll look to post it later.

Sorry, Garrett, I don't have any pics handy. Maybe JoeW does? I have the same Safety Devices roll bar as Joe, Jeff Curtis and Bill Gregory, except Bill and Jeff have the full cage.
Bill, Is the full Safety Devices cage still required for PCA stock classes? I know you can run with just a rollbar in stock class but due to its spec, the SD item at one point required the full cage. I'm wondering if that's still true ... you know, just in case.

And Bill, a picture of the DAS would be great if you don't mind. I can't really see the configuration based on the pictures from vendors (uninstalled). I did read your PCA letter about roll bars... that was very informative; thanks!
And, yes, a 964 coupe is the planned replacement for the 65... I have several offers in on that car already! Boy, I got bitten by the 964 bug!!!

Mild Steel 1.75" x .120"
Alloy Steel 1.625" x .095"
The good news is, if the rollbar doesn't work, two of the four feet needed for the cage are already installed!

Hey Tom, thanks! Do you have any pics of the behind-seat area where it mounts? Thanks! That's a steel cage, right?
Are aluminum cages not legal for PCA club racing? I would assume they're a lot lighter. How much does the SD steel cage weigh?
Thanks guys!!!

I'll get some more pics later this week or over the weekend between runs. Two more "feet" attach to the frame right by the back part of the door (like shown by the front of the door) and then two run back to the rear seatbelt hardpoints. You can see this a bit from the first photo - the bar with the hotlap timer looking out the window goes to the back seat.
Yes, it's steel. I have no idea what it weighs. It you want light, I'd imagine a custom fabbed cage would be better, but more expensive. I have some receipts from the PO and I think this cage was $1-2k. To have a custom cage done in the bay area (that would look great) would be about $3k (if no ties to the front shock towers, that costs more).

3-4K for a custom cage up here in the NW.
- more painted (about 500.00) + reassembly interior work (headliner)
- even more for CroMo (materials + it has to be stress relieved though out the welding process which takes a lot of time to do right)
geez - on second thought the bolt in cage looks like a good option for an occasional race car that can be driven on the street.
Aluminium is not legal anywhere on the planet anymore (and even iffy in vintage cars, the only reason it would be in there is if the car was orignally equiped with it and it is documented as such) - it does nothing for your safety other than provide a sense of false security.

Yikes, 8 years ago when I got a custom cage welded to my existing roll bar in my 65 up in Santa Rosa it was $500 with DOM tubing - it was very well done. Inflation I guess! So Tom, your bar is welded in in the front, but bolted in the rear?
Rob -- interesting about the aluminum - why do they (FVD) sell it then?! That's silly.
