Default plastic or metal intake is best?

I have a 1990, 3.6 being put together for me to replace my old 2.7 and I am given the choice between the original metal intake or to go with plastic. Which is better and what are the benefits?

Tom, Do a search on "plastic intake" and you will see a couple of discussions. Search the 964 list.

Tom!

If you have the choice...take the plastic intakes, the Throttle body is of the later shape, thus allowing you to move over to Hot wire in a later upgrade!

I was once told the plastic intake engines get some HP's more than the ones with aluminum intakes!! But that seems doubtful to me as I cannot imagine Porsche claiming approx 250 HP with the aluminium manifolds and change to the plastic ones agin claiming approx 250 HP. IMHO the move to the plastic part had following reasons:

1)save a bit of weight
2)Less costs for the company as plastic mouldings are cheaper to build as the cast aluminum ones
3)Less heat transfer between intake and engine, plastic is less heat conductive than aluminum.

Just my two cents

Yes, most tuners will recommend the plastic one...but usually in conjunction with other enhancements. But at least you would have that one in case you decide something in the future...
