Default Electric Power Steering

Recently I found a company produce electric power steering for 964.
Wondering anyone has any review on this?
I had my hydraulic power steering deleted and converted to manual rack.
But seems a good option for a motorized steering
Regards

I installed a Volvo electric power steering unit in my car. Had to run pressure hose into drink area where unit was mounted. Then found a control module on eBay that allows me to increase or decease pump out put. Installed a control switch on center consul.
you would need to reinstall the power steering rack and then run pressure hose but is a pretty straight forward job

Very cool. Nice to see a compact option. Hope to hear about more reviews on this. Several folks have used a 996 pump. I like the fact that it's an oem part and can be easily replaced. Only draw back is you loose some frunk space for the spare.

Thanks Gus,
The initial idea for me to swap from stock power steering to manual rack is to get rid of the oil.
Really not keen to go back to hydraulic.
I think modern vehicle are move to pure electric operated steering.
So that will be my goal from the beginning.

This has been a product for some years for classic cars. To me, it seems like a compromise that will reduce steering feel in most situations. A proper OEM EPAS system took the OEMs a long time to get to where enthusiasts accepted them. They typically have their own brain and rely on sensor data from various systems (speed, turning effort, ABS).

I feel like it needs to be either a hydraluic assist (engine or electric driven) with a hydraulic rack OR just manual.

Marketing - wanting to get rid of the streering fluid leaks is why I made my changes. I could replace the long lines run back to the engine with very short lines. Plus I used all aircraft grade hardware (stainless steel) and AN fittings. I have have no leaks/ or seeps in 5 years.
I have looked at the all electric (only) as a possibility, but the designs that I have reviewed will not fit on the lower steering shaft area and certainly not by the steering rack.

Did you do a build thread for your conversion Gus, I’ve seen the Merc A class pump used and the TRW, but not a Volvo

I’ve been considering this modification, and interested hear from others who tread down this path. It’s the 996 cup pump I believe. I like the fact that it doesn’t draw off the engine, it’s OEM as noted, and best of all the weight is moved up front. There’s no spare in my trunk.

Apologies to the OP for going off topic.

I believe you are correct it is 996 cup pump. I'm not sure if you saw this thread https://rennlist.com/forums/964-foru...ring-pump.html After seeing this I'm considering b/c steering is super tough at low speeds or trying to park. I get a workout! Hmm...maybe that's why my rotator cuffs are bad hahah

The Porsche motorsports pump is actually a Vauxhaul pump and can be purchased used or refurbished for pennies. I installed one in the Blue Meanie project. With the extra wide 993 longitudinal and 9.5 inch wide front wheels I could barely mussel it around the carrousel at the Glen at speed. A very worth while investment however you will need a power rack which has become prohibitively expensive these days.

Good feedback, thanks. TRW or Vauxhaul both seem to sell used for $200 to $300, which seems like pennies compared to stock Porsche parts. I have a fiberglass engine tin, and now need to figure out how to fill the hole…

And continuing apologies to OP for hijacking this thread!

Interesting. I'd definitely want to drive this before committing to it. Every EPS car I own has a more numb feel to it compared to manual or hydraulic. The latest 992 does feel pretty good, 991 wasn't nearly as nice as a 997 on the front end feel. The 981 Spyder was pretty good but that used a different rack compared to the cayman/boxster. Still EPS tho.

I have the 996 cup car pump (I got used cheap) and plumbed it in. yeah it takes some frunk space but no engine routing. And it sounds cool powering up and down. And the FEEL is great.

Does anyone make a full kit for the TRW or cup car pump plus plumbing? Ie, they provide all the necessary plumbing pre cut to correct sizes, instructions, wiring, etc.

Having owned a 996, 997, 991.1 and currently own a 991.2 tt - and two 964s, I agree with you, but the 991.2 is much better than the 991.1, but not as nice as the 964. I liked the 996 too.
